Is the Face of Luxury Sedans

As Audi has innovated and improved its vehicles each year, it has gotten closer and closer to being the premier luxury vehicle automaker in the world. The new Audi A8 is a testament to that statement, as it sets the bar high for performance, class, luxury, comfort, and fuel economy.

For a sedan as massive as the Audi A8, it’s impressive that it weighs a mere 4,034 pounds, which is the best-in-class for all-wheel drive models. The body, which is an Audi Space Frame design, is constructed almost exclusively out of aluminum and weighs just 510 pounds. To give the body more depth and character, the hood, grille, and front bumper are even more sculpted and shaped and the lower edge of the headlights is cut with a straight edge.

The headlights have a particularly innovative and advanced design. Audi offers the option of Matrix LED technology headlights, which are at the top of the innovation ladder in terms of design and technology. This Matrix LED technology allows the driver to control how bright his high beams are by individually turning off certain light-emitting diodes.

In addition, the lighting system predicts the route of the car, using the navigation system, to alter the distribution of light.

The first four engine options of the A8 consist of two gasoline and two diesel. These four options are comprised of the supercharged 3.0 TFSI with 310 horsepower, the V8 twin-turbo 4.0 TFSI with 435 horsepower, the 3.0 TDI clean diesel with 258 horsepower, and the 4.2 TDI clean diesel with 385 horsepower and 626 foot-pounds of torque. The 4.0 TFSI can hit 62 mph in 4.5 seconds and uses an Audi cylinder on demand system to deactivate 4 cylinders during easy use.

The 3.0 TDI clean diesel is the most efficient of the bunch, delivering 39.9 mpg.

These four engine variants aren’t the only options, though. The highest model is the 6.3-liter Audi A8 L W12 quattro, which generates 500 horsepower and delivers 20 mpg, the best-in-class fuel economy. It also makes use of a unique version of Audi’s cylinder on demand (COD) system to shut off six cylinders.

Shutting off the six cylinders can increase vibration and engine noise, so the Audi A8 features Active Noise Cancellation.

Boasting 520 horsepower, the Audi S8 is the sportiest of the bunch. It’s 4.0 TFSI engine partnered with quattro all-wheel drive can hit 62 mph in 4.2 seconds. Even with this power it can achieve 23 mpg, thanks to the cylinder on demand system.

Like the A8 L W12, the S8 features Active Noise Cancellation to avoid excessive vibrations and noise during COD use.

Using both a 2.0 TFSI engine and an electric motor, the Audi A8 hybrid delivers 245 horsepower and 354 foot-pounds of torque and still has a fuel economy rating of 37 mpg. The lithium ion battery allows electric driving for up to 1.8 miles and a top speed of 62 mph.

All of the Audi A8 models come with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. With quick-shifting from the tiptronic, the Audi A8 provides a comfortable and smooth ride all the time. The Audi A8 also sits on a great chassis that controls the suspension and damping, offering a sporty ride that puts it at the top of its class.

The interior of the A8 comes with a myriad of options. From massage seats to heated seats to individual rear seats to a leather-wrapped console to a power foot rest, the A8 is the epitome of luxury. It is all about the driver’s experience, which is why just about everything has an option.

The seat covers, inlays, and colors, the wood inserts, and the entire interior color and material have several options.

Also as included as options are the driver assist programs. There is adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go function, Audi side assist, Audi active lane assist, and park assist. There is also a heads-up display, which displays important information on the driver side of the windshield, including a night vision assistant that recognizes pedestrians and animals in the dark.

Also featured in the A8 is Audi Connect, which enables passengers to connect the A8 to the internet by creating a WLAN hotspot. This system uses the internet to give the driver important information about navigation, and other necessary programs the driver utilizes. If the Active Noise Cancellation doesn’t work properly, I’m sure the Bang and Olufsen Advanced Sound System could do the trick blocking out engine noise.

The Audi A8 will hit dealerships in Germany in November with a starting price of 74,500 Euros.
