Month running an Audi A3 Sportback: the controls aren’t up to scratch

Our A3 has a simple spec, with its dials and air-con knobs to the cabin hotter or cooler. those. And no safety systems holler if you change lane or

The A3 does have Drive to tweak driving modes, but simple because all modes identical. I’ve decided and engine map are the same in Efficiency, or Comfort mode; the only change is the indicator’s earlier to upshift in Efficiency, and the air-con it’s in ‘eco’.

But there are some perverse features designed by the sick masochists who Japanese game shows. among them is MMI Touch, of the £1495 Tech package. In you input commands by drawing on the centre console’s touchpad.

It may for the 11% of people who are left-handed, but I end up looking I have the motor skills of a You’re drawing blind an unfamiliar finger, trying to deflections from the A3’s (but not unbearable) suspension, trying to avoid a massive Useless.

Even more infuriating is the voice control button: it process freeform chat, so you commands that are listed on the which it misinterprets a la hapless Manuel in Fawlty Towers. frustrating and so much slower using the delightful aluminium buttons in conjunction with the controller to select functions

I know that’s relatively new and tech, but it doesn’t feel it – it’s simple and intuitive to Amen to that, car designers.

Month three an Audi A3 Sportback: can the A3 really its claimed economy figures?

500 not just the parenthesis of The Proclaimers’ wedding anthem, but the goal been targeting for the A3 Sportback’s on one tank. This isn’t so a stretch goal, more a reach: our very first managed 441 miles and 47.2mpg. The Mk3 A3 conserving fuel: it’s lighter than its predecessor, and 12% frugal.

Engine stop/start is along with a gearshift forever cajoling you to change up. And Drive Select, which four driving modes Efficiency. In this, the throttle slightly less responsive and the spins less freely, and the runs in eco mode.

Efficiency is perfect for my daily commute.

The smooth 2.0-litre TDI has bought into the efficiency Peak torque of 236lb ft in at 1750rpm, so you can surf a few bursts of reach cruising speed, engage overdrive. Driven this the A3 still feels – the TDI does 0-62mph in 8.7sec.

But you do to downshift to overtake, and watch the below 1750rpm.

This after four A1 round in Efficiency mode, I scored 501 between fill-ups, and 54.2mpg. You know what was doubly you don’t have to drive an octogenarian to achieve good mpg in an A3.

Month two running an A3 Sportback: the A3’s a decent after all

Nose-heavy handling, steering, dodgy ride, interiors – that’s the truism Audis. Well, I’m pleased to that, dynamically, our A3 Sportback is as as a chaste Essex girl.

The A3 can carve through corners deftly. Tipping the car in loads up the wheels in one motion, then the wheel and as the weight transfers, the rear wheel can hop like a hot The front wheels cling on so you can get back on the power early to away.

Audi has minimised up front with lots of components. Electronics brake the front wheel during to quell understeer, and it largely though you can still feel the wheel spinning away

Other pluses are the light, electromechanical steering, and the way the manual through six, closely gears. But reverse is too closely with first, meaning possible to select the wrong Could well end in tears.

trim drops the body and stiffens the dampers. The ride is a bit but it’s not as painful as the incessant from the 225/40 R18 Continentals, you’re at 30mph or 70mph. the A3 is shaping up nicely.

Month one running an Audi A3 : the editor explains the new Audi’s

Three Range Rovers, two two hot hatches, and a partridge in a pear Actually, and an Audi RS5 and Subaru WRX (remember those?) – that’s my haul over the past or so. Haul is an appropriate word for my first wagon – or Sportback in

And compared with that performance-oriented list of cars, the A3 2.0-litre TDI Sport feels modest.

Though the OTR price is but: £23,350, and a grand of £28,900 after options. The A3 starts at £17,905 for a 1.2-litre but the equivalent five-door Sportback a £620 premium, and selecting the diesel engine and mid-ranking trim pushes the price £23k.

Regular readers know how the A3 fits into Group’s masterplan to dominate the car market, but bear with me. that Star Wars scene where Darth surveys his troops, with the stretching all the way to the horizon? Substitute stormtroopers for six million gleaming new from VW, Skoda, Seat and all born from the shared DNA of the components set. The A3 is the sleek more specialist than its infantry.

When not battling on ice planet Hoth, you’ll them having aspirational breaks in boutique hotels.

Though the A3 does come in Glacier White, we plumped for Misano Red pearl effect which helped make our RS5 so dashing. And we upgraded the standard rims to the £595 Dynamic so it looks like this A3 on Japanese throwing stars. All to effect: the Sportback looks – I’d far rather stare at Vauxhall’s Astra.

The A3’s beauty beneath the skin, in its cabin and the way it The cockpit is high quality, to use and the details are fabulous: the wafer-thin that rises up-periscope the dashtop; the three-dimensional strips resemble chunks of aluminium the white LED circles that the cupholders and MMI rotary controller at

This doubles up as a touchpad, your finger can scribble to input a postcode or phone On right-hand-drive cars, the touchpad on the left, so spec this if you’re hungry to improve left-handed writing. MMI Touch as part of the £1495 Technology comprising uprated sat-nav, CD/DVD/memory card unit and music streaming.

The other option is the xenon light For £1250, you get xenon headlamps swivel with the steering to shine around corners, lights and wipers, and the previously interior lighting effects, also extend to the footwells and mirrors.

To complete the A3 spec, we ticked: a sound system upgrade, 10 speakers and 180-watt output; rear parking sensor; a £75 pressure monitor; and finally, the black Alcantara and leather Whether you like it or not, seats come with an £145 surcharge: you have to the storage/luggage package including a double CD-sized storage under the rear seats, a of 12v sockets and an extra fastening in boot. There’s no storage for the straws Audi needs to to justify this extra

There are three options I’m compared with my Range Evoque: DAB radio to listen to 5 its glass roof panel and entry, options which have cost another But I’m already savouring far superior economy from this diesel – 48.9mpg from the A3 month, compared with a Evoque average. Can the A3 ride and as deftly, and can I get 500 miles from a tank?
