Aston Martin DBS

The Aston Martin DBS is one of the most storied models ever produced by the British manufacturer of high-end, luxuriously appointed sports cars. The DBS name was first immortalized when it was driven by none other than James Bond himself in the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Aston Martin DBS Origins

The original DBS was the successor to the Aston Martin DB6 and was powered by a straight-six engine. As a coupe, it was larger than the DB6 and had four full-size seats. The car was given a more modern look than the series of Aston Martins that preceded it, incorporating a fastback rear end and squared front grille.

It discontinued in 1972 to make way for the Aston Martin Vantage.

Modern Aston Martin DBSs

The DBS reappeared in 2007, and was 007’s preferred vehicle in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Like all Aston Martins, particularly those in the esteemed DB Series, the DBS is known for providing an unparalleled mixture of performance and elegance. However, like most Aston Martins, the DBS’s price tag puts it well out of reach for most drivers.

Just as it did in the 1960s and 1970s, the DBS offers a driving experience that can only be matched by the very best from top-of-the-line sports car manufacturers. You don’t get to be James Bond’s vehicle of choice for nothing, after all.

The current model DBS is Aston Martin’s flagship sports car, and based on the Aston Martin DB9. Like the DB9, the DBS is available as both a coupe and a convertible. It comes equipped with two seats standard, along with parcel bins in the rear with an option for a pair of tiny rear seats. The DBS is also slightly lower and wider than the DB9.

This low center of gravity helps facilitate the car’s spectacular handling ability.

The DBS also features a unique Adaptive Damping System that was developed by Aston Martin to allow the suspension to adapt to and cope with an individual driver’s style, in addition to weather and road conditions. In an effort to control the DBS’s weight, the manufacturer also made extensive use of carbon fiber throughout the car, including in such components as the hood, the trunk, and the door opening surrounds.

Under the hood, the DBS boasts a massive V-12 capable of generating 510 horsepower. The engine is also equipped with an active bypass valve that opens up when the car tops 5500 rpm, allowing increased airflow into the engine for enhanced performance, of which the DBS has plenty: it is capable of going from 0 to 60 in just over four seconds.

Some of the high-end and high-tech features that are included in the Aston Martin DBS include carbon ceramic disc brakes, xenon headlights, alloy wheels, an active suspension, automatic climate control, power heated seats, Bluetooth capability, a hard drive-based navigation system, and a sound system by Bang Olufsen. The 2012 Aston Martin DBS has rear drive and comes equipped with a standard six-speed manual gearbox. There is also the option for a six-speed automatic with paddle shifter.

Aston Martin DBS Products and Technologies

The DBS V12 was introduced in 2008 to succeed the Vanquish S as Aston Martin’s flagship vehicle. However, due to the exclusivity of its price tag, the DBS is a low-volume seller. That means used models are rather difficult to come by.

Still, if you do discover used models, you will find that the 2008 was available only in a coupe version with a two-seat interior and a six-speed manual transmission. In the 2009 model, 2+2 seating and automatic transmissions were made available for the first time.

The Volante convertible version was first introduced in 2010. That year Aston Martin also introduced the revised navigation system (featured on the current model) and the Bang Olufsen sound system, which was previously optional, became standard issue.
