About This Model

The Alfa Romeo Alfetta was a marketing success throughout most of the world, with sales totaling over 400,000. Building on the popularity of Alfa#39;s sporting cars and racing success, the conservative-appearing sedans were considered a cut above conventional four doors in both prestige and performance.

The sedan was introduced to Europe in 1972 and continued in various iterations until.

The sedan was introduced to Europe in 1972 and continued in various iterations until 1987. However, the Alfetta was available in the U.S. for only four years: 1975-#39;79. With a rear mounted transaxle/differential combination, much like that of Alfa#39;s previous Grand Prix cars, the sedan boasted excellent weight distribution.

Independent front suspension with double wishbones and torsion bars and a De Dion rear suspension with inboard brakes and minimal unsprung weight made the Alfetta surefooted in tight corners. Early U.S. versions were equipped with a 1.8-litre version of Alfa Romeo#39;s dual-overhead-cam, aluminum four cylinder, while later versions got an upgraded 2-litre.

A coupe version with much more handsome Giugaro styling was introduced in 1974 as the Alfetta GT. It came to the U.S. shortly thereafter. With a 4.5-inch shorter wheelbase than the sedan, it felt more nimble.

Its mechanical systems, however, were virtually identical. All U.S. cars got the 2-litre version of the aluminum four, although other markets had a choice of smaller versions of that engine as well.

For 1979, the coupe was restyled a bit and redubbed the GTV. The GTV was eventually fitted with a fuel-injected 2.5-litre V6 that delivered good performance in the lightweight coupe. The U.S. market got two limited-production versions of the GTV-6. The Balocco of 1982 came exclusively in red with a black interior that featured red piping on the seats. Only 350 were built.

A later Maratona version came only in silver. Production totaled 150. Of course both of these are quite rare.

In addition, Callaway Cars, which was best known for hot Chevrolets, built some seriously powerful twin- turbo GTV-6 coupes.

While the Alfetta sedan and coupe were a sales success in some markets, they were not reliable automobiles. They were also prone to rusting and did little to improve Alfa Romeo#39;s international image.
