A 1992 Acura Integra needs a new ABS master cylinder.

Question: 1992 Acura Integra

I am replacing my master cylinder on my 1992 Acura Integra. What is involved in this repair and how do I know if I need to order an ABS master cylinder or non-ABS? In other words, how do I tell if the car has ABS?

Also how do I tell if it is a 1.7, 1.8 GS, RS or whatever? I can’t find an information plate on the motor or in the owner’s manual.

Thanks for your help

Answer: The easiest way to tell if the vehicle is equipped with ABS brakes is to turn the ignition key ON and see if there is an ABS light in the instrument cluster. If there isn’t an ABS light, you don’t have ABS.

Replace the master cylinder is the same for non-ABS and ABS brakes. Disconnect the fluid level sensor electrical connector, if equipped. Remove both brake lines and remove the two nuts holding it to the brake vacuum booster.

Before you install it on the vehicle put the plastic fittings on the new master cylinder tight enough to insure they won’t leak. Attach the rubber hoses to the fittings at route them into the master cylinder. Mount the master cylinder in a vise and fill it with clean DOT 3 or DOT 4 Brake Fluid. With a screwdriver work the master cylinder until there are no more bubbles coming from the hoses.

If the new master cylinder doesn’t come with the fittings and hoses you can buy them for very little money.

Once that is done mount the master cylinder loosely on the vehicle and remove the plastic fittings and hoses. Install the brake lines hand tight, then tighten the mounting nuts. Tighten the metal brake lines and top off the master cylinder. Have an assistant in the car and have him/her pump the brake pedal 3 or 4 times and hold it down. Crack the rear line and let any air left bleed out.

Repeat this as many times as needed.

When the line is cracked the pedal will go to the floor. Your assistant must leave it there until you retighten the line or air will get sucked back in. Repeat this procedure for the front brake line.

Clean up any spilled brake fluid, top of the master cylinder and you are done.

Brake fluid will eat the paint so be careful not to get any on the paint. If you do flush it with lots of water ASAP!

The Vehicle grade is the eighth digit of the Vehicle Identification Number.

4: RS

5: LS

6: GS

7: GS with leather seats and steering wheel cover

8: GSR (3 door only)
