About the Porsche Boxster

History

The Boxster was originally introduced to halt sagging sales at Porsche. It was based on a number of earlier Porsche designs, primarily the Spyder and Spyder 550. The 986 model appeared in 1997 to solid sales, and upgrades were introduced in 2000, 2003, and 2004. A second model, known as the 987, first appeared at the Paris Auto Show in 2004, featuring larger air vents and an increased wheel size in addition to cosmetic changes in the headlights and interior.

A limited production of the Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 became available in the fall of 2008 for the 2009 calendar year.

Features

The 987 base features a 2.7 liter 6-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower. The S Edition has a larger 3.5 liter engine and 285 horsepower, allowing for greater acceleration and a higher top speed. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard for the base, with options for a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual available in the Sport package.

The S Edition has a 6-speed manual transmission with options for a Tiptronic 5-speed automatic transmission. Mileage is fairly good with both models: 18 to 20 mpg in the city and 26 to 29 mpg on the highway. Safety features include airbags, anti-lock brakes and rollover protection bars that will keep the interior from collapsing in the event of an accident.

Expert Insight

The interior of the Boxster has been a source of design concern: so-called button clutter makes it difficult for the driver to select the features he needs. The company has promised to address the problem with future models. Drivers concerned about appearances also note the rather plain interior of the Boxster, which makes it appear inexpensive despite its strong performance and mid-range price tag.

Despite such niggling problems, the Boxster has won a number of awards, including Best-Of awards from Car and Driver, Motor, and Automobile magazines the year it was released, and citations from Newsweek and BusinessWeek magazines that same year as well.
