Chevrolet Aveo

Introduction

The Chevy Aveo made its American debut at the 2003 Chicago Auto Show. Chevy initially offered the Aveo as a 5-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan. Both models sold well.

By 2006, the Aveo was the best-selling subcompact car in America. The Aveo replaced the marketing segment formerly held by the Chevy Metro until it was phased out in 2001. Like the Metro, the Aveo was aimed at first time car buyers and became GM’s lowest priced automobile upon going on sale in November 2003.

The Aveo’s base retail price was below $10,000 at a time when the average car bought in America approached $25,000.

Second Generation

In 2006, GM Daewoo began selling a new version of the Aveo around the world. The new car, dubber T250, was again sold under many names, going on sale in the United States as a 2007 model Aveo. It was similar in many ways to its predecessor (known as T200).

The new Aveo was available in 4- and 5-door versions, and a 3-door hatchback was added to the lineup later. Chevy offered new safety features on the Aveo; these included side airbags and an on-board tire pressure monitoring system.

Other Versions

General Motors searched for ways to expand the Aveo market following its success. The 3-door model was modified to be sold as the Pontiac G3 for the 2009 model year, but the decision to drop the Pontiac brand suspended the G3 project. For 2009, the Aveo was sold in three trim levels known as 1LS, 1LT and 2LT.

A retuning of the original 1.6 liter engine resulted in even better fuel economy, rated as high as 50 mpg under certain conditions.
