92 Toyota Pickup Purchase.

I came here since you guys seemed to have lots of good experience with the Toyota pickups. My family has pretty good success with the older Toyotas. My brother has had 2 96 Tacomas, both the 2.7L 4×4 and it’s always performed very well without requiring much attention.

Now that I bought a house and will be doing lots of renovations I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a small pickup as a secondary vehicle, solely for winter weather and home depot/Lowes trips.

I always though the Toyota pickup was nice, seems smaller than the Tacoma but very dependable and reliable which is what I want. It doesn’t have to have any frills, aside for AC. I’ve been searching online, and located on locally.

It’s a 92 4 cyl 22re auto with 4×4. Looks pretty clean for a 92, and has about 170k miles. Owner said nothing wrong with it, but who can trust a seller if you don’t know them. Anyway he wanted 3k OBO so I want to check out. I was feeling good about looking at it, until I read up on msn carpoint and checked out their reliability ratings for this particular vehicle.

It seemed to have extensive reports of costly repairs which I though was weird because everyone raves about how bulletproof this particular engine and truck is. I was reading problems of head gaskets, anti-lock brake sensors, and some other sensors, along with the AC refrigerant issue.

With that said what do you think of the truck? I obviously need to see, drive and inspect it, but is there anything I should be worried or concerned with? I know buying used is always a roll of the die, but I was thinking buying a used car that has a well-known dependable and reliable engine in it would take out some of the fears and unknowns.

I like the truck, and the fact that it’s smaller and AUTO. as much as I would want a stick, having the auto is a little better for me since my wife doesn’t know how to drive stick, nor wants to know.

I’ve also been looking at T100s which has the backseat as a big appeal to me. It seems to me that all the ones I find are majorly rusted. Reading reviews it gets stellar marks, but it seems like there is more stuff on it to break or go wrong with, compared to the pickup.

I found a 95 T100 with 160k miles auto v6 that I’m looking at as well since it’s local but was told it’s got body and frame rust.

Any opinion on the topic would be greatly appreciated. Miles really doesn’t matter to me if the machine is designed well. I had a super mint condition 94 GMC Jimmy with low miles and It was a nightmare.

I constantly had to repair it multiple times and it became a money pit that I thank God cut my lose when I did. My current DD has been great (knock on wood) acura rsx with over 100k miles, so miles don’t scare me away, I just want to make sure everything else should be OK.

Thank you in advance for your time, comments and input.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone and welcome!
