Mercedes added the GLK-Class to its lineup back in 2008, and in just a few months it became one of the best-sold crossovers on the market. Still, the GLK has one little problem; because of its compact dimensions, it does not offer enough space for passengers and luggage.

With this is mind, Mercedes has started to develop the next GLK and our spy photographers managed to catch it testing today on German roads. As you can see, the next-gen GLK is still in its early stages of development because of the heavy camouflage, but even so, it#8217;s pretty clear that the model will drop the current boxy style and will adopt a more rounded appearance.

The 2015 GLK will be based on the soon-to-be-released 2015 C-Class #8217;s platform, so we expect it to share the range of engines with the sedan too. This will give customers a wide range of gasoline and diesel engines, with a hybrid version also being a possibility.

Expect the new GLK to arrive a few months after the C-Class, likely sometime in late 2014 or early 2015.

The prototype caught testing today by our spy photographers wears tons of camouflage, so it is a little difficult to see all of the features of the new GLK.

It is pretty clear that the next-gen GLK will drop the current boxy style that made the crossover so famous. It will adopt a more rounded shape, with elements inspired by the recently launched models, like the GLA-Class. From this it will most likely get the twin-louver grille, the new hood with powerdomes and headlights with available LED daytime running lamps.

The GLK and the Q5 arrived on the market at about the same time, and the two have been at war ever since. Choosing between the two is pretty difficult, as each is unique in its own way. The Q5 is more elegant, but the GLK is more aggressive and looks more like an SUV.

On the American market, the Q5 is offered with a choice of three engines. The base Q5 2.0T features a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 220 horsepower. Next up is the 3.0 TDI model, which makes use of a 3.0-liter, turbo-diesel V-6 engine that produces 240 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque.

Capping of fthe lineup sans the SQ5 is a 3.0-liter, V-6 engine with a supercharger that produces 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
