Volvo XC70 Review

Research Other Years

The 2014 Volvo XC70 ranks 7 out of 9 Wagons. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Volvo XC70, as well as reliability and safety data.

While critics agree that the 2014 Volvo XC70 is spacious and comfortable, most recommend looking at competing wagons and compact SUVs for better performance and fuel economy.

The 2014 Volvo XC70 features a six-cylinder engine that reviewers say provides adequate passing power. A more powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engine is available, and test drivers think that it offers significantly improved acceleration over the base engine. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that automotive journalists say shifts smoothly and quickly.

The EPA estimates that the base 2014 XC70 gets 18/26 mpg city/highway, and the turbocharged model gets 17/24, both of which are poor estimates for the class. Reviewers agree that the Volvo XC70 provides good traction on dirt or snow-covered roads. However, they say that the XC70 is not as agile around corners as many of its competitors.

Automotive journalists agree that the 2014 XC70 has a nice-looking, well-built interior that features quality materials. They also think that the front seats are very comfortable. Most critics say the rear seats are comfortable as well, though a couple complain that they lack legroom.

The cargo area is spacious for the class, and reviewers say the XC70’s folding rear seats make it easy to store large items. Most test drivers agree that the XC70 uses large, easy-to-read buttons to control the car’s various features. However, a few complain that the Sensus infotainment system’s interface isn’t as appealing or as easy to use as Volvo’s competitors’ systems.

Standard features on the 2014 XC70 include City Safety, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system, automatic climate control, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and an eight-speaker stereo with satellite radio and a USB input. Optional features include a moonroof, navigation and a 12-speaker surround-sound audio system. The Volvo XC70 is available with a number of driver assistance features, including pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, blind spot warning, lane departure warning and a road-sign-reading system that can alert you when you’re exceeding the speed limit.

If you just need the XC70’s AWD abilities but not its premium brand name and price tag, the Subaru Outback makes a far better choice. — Kelley Blue Book If you’re looking for a luxurious midsize wagon that’s comfortable around town, fun to drive on back roads and built to weather the occasional off-road jaunt (or more likely, winter storms), this Volvo could be an ideal companion. — Edmunds XC70 has its charms, among them a roomy cabin, refined drivetrain, and impressive build quality. — Consumer Guide (2013)

Other Wagons to Consider

The Subaru Outback has standard all-wheel drive, and reviewers say it has a roomy back seat, a comfortable ride and a large cargo area. The Outback also gets better fuel economy than the XC70 and costs thousands less.

Test drivers say the Acura RDX is a spacious and comfortable luxury compact SUV. The RDX gets better gas mileage than the XC70, and reviewers like its powerful V6 engine.
