2014 Volvo S80

Life Aboard

The S80 offers room for five passengers with a level of comfort and luxury that can rival well-established competitors from Germany and Japan. The dashboard boasts soft-touch materials, leather and real wood trim.

The instrument cluster consists of an analog speedometer flanked by four digital gauges. All trims come with a thin-film transistor (TFT) screen that can be configured by the driver.

The S80 offers 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space with the rear seats left up. Carrying long items such as skis is a breeze thanks to a pass-through integrated into the rear arm rest.

All S80s regardless of trim level come standard with a dash-mounted seven-inch color touch screen that runs Volvo#039;s Sensus infotainment system. Sensus groups the car’s connectivity, entertainment and navigation (if equipped) functions into a single easy-to-use unit that can also be controlled with buttons on the center stack and a voice command feature. The screen also displays images in cars equipped with a rear-view camera, and gives the driver access to a host of menus that provide vital information about the car and its surroundings.

Under The Hood

As its name clearly indicates, the entry-level S80 3.2 is powered by a 3.2-liter straight-six engine rated at 240 horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of torque. Linked to a six-speed transmission that spins the front wheels, the six-cylinder propels the S80 from zero to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 130 mph.

The more expensive S80 T6 uses a 3.0-liter straight-six that sends 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft. of torque to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. The sprint from zero to 60 mph is achieved in 6 seconds flat, and top speed is limited at 155 mph.

The front-wheel drive S80 returns 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway, while the all-wheel drive model is rated at 18 mpg in the city and 25 mph on the highway.
