Mitsubishi has announced pricing and fuel economy estimates for its newest affordable small car. the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage, which will start at $13,790 after a $795 destination charge. The automaker says in a press release that the 2014 Mirage offers better fuel economy than any other non-hybrid car currently sold in America, getting up to 44 mpg on the highway.

The Mirage comes with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine that produces 74 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. Mitsubishi says the Mirage gets its best fuel economy estimates with the CVT, returning 37/44 mpg city/highway, or 40 mpg combined.

Competing subcompact cars like the Nissan Versa and Chevrolet Spark are more powerful, but also have lower fuel economy estimates at 31/40 and 32/38 mpg, respectively.

The 2014 Mirage is a five-door hatchback that comes in two trims.

The base Mirage DE comes with standard features that include automatic climate control, keyless entry, full power accessories, seven air bags and a four-speaker stereo with a CD player and USB port. The ES trim starts at $14,990 and adds features like keyless access with push-button start, Bluetooth phone connectivity, cruise control, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, fog lights and alloy wheels.

Optional features include a navigation system with a backup camera, as well as front and rear parking sensors. “A loaded Mirage will set buyers back a tad less than $17,000, which is a lot less money than a well-optioned Fiesta, Fit, or Sonic,” writes Car and Driver. “The car’s value proposition is made rosier by its astronomical EPA fuel-economy ratings of 37 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway for CVT-equipped models.”

USA Today says that Mitsubishi is struggling to sell new vehicles in the U.S. “Mitsubishi hopes new models, including a replacement for the midsize Galant eventually, will turn around its U.S. fortunes.” The automaker sold 35,699 vehicles in the U.S. so far this year, and Mitsubishi’s year-to-date sales are down 3.7 percent compared with 2012. To put that in perspective, Toyota sold 34,780 Camry sedans last month alone.

The Mirage’s release date has not been officially announced, but, Kicking Tires reports that the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage will go on sale in late September or early October.
