What#8217;s Not Good

2014 Mazda 6 – Road Test Review score: 8 out of 10

The outgoing Mazda 6 was a bit boring. Sure it handled well, did it#8217;s job as a mid size sedan but never really wowed us. Given that Toyota sells so many more Camrys, the new Mazda 6 needed to be great.

It#8217;s a clean sheet design, they threw away the old mold and came up with an aggressive  modern car with new body, suspension, power ­train, interior, and exterior#8230; and boy does it look good . No longer the car that stands in the corner at parties with an alcohol free beer, this one has attitude and style. That style pasess through to the interior#8230;.but more on that later.

The 2014 Mazda 6 has a 4 cylinder 2488 cc engine producing  184 hp @ 5700 rpm and 185 lb-ft @ 3250 rpm. We drove the auto version, Touring and that was maybe a mistake. 0-60 takes a leisurely 7.9 seconds which is over a second slower than a 4 cylinder Toyota Camry, which whizzes to 60 in 6.6secs!

This engine uses Mazda#8217;s Skyactiv G technology which improves fuel economy by using very high compression ratios#8230;the highest for a gas engine. It also improves torque at lower revs. Unfortunately it is not enough and we believe they need a turbo to compete.

How many times have we said that?

Once on  the move the Mazda rides well if fairly stiff, not unlike a Ford Fusion  and the body is well controlled with little roll. It definitely feels like a sports sedan#8230;..it just needs more power. The gas pedal feels stiff almost as if they don#8217;t want you to floor it. It all feels engineered for economy and the transmission feels lazy.

We think the Sport model with manual transmission is the one to go for at $21,675 #8230;move up to the Touring and the price shoots up to $30,29.

Through the bends the Mazda hold a firm line and the steering is accurate and nicely weighted. Grip is good too especially on the 19 in wheels on the Touring.

They have done an excellent job on the interior. The seats are superb and hold you in place well. The dash plastics are smooth and wouldn#8217;t feel out of place in a VW which excels at interiors.

The Sport model has few options and you don#8217;t get Bluetooth.

Spec out the more expensive models and you can feast on 5.8-inch touch screen, satellite radio, navigation, automatic climate control, auto-dimming mirrors, bi-xenon headlights, a rear view camera, power seats, leather, and safety options such as blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning.

#8230;..it#8217;s a bit too much nannying for us though. .

Moving up to the Touring version adds a touch screen, 19-inch wheels, automatic climate control, and a power driver’s seat.

One thing to point out is that Mazda may give us the diesel version (not confirmed yet) which has a 2.2 liter turbo diesel with 175 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque and ONLY and automatic transmission.

These are Euro specs so these number may be a little different for the US market.

W hat would we do?

Get the manual transmission and this car is way more fun and truer to it#8217;s nature. The auto box dulls what is a very fine package but this car still beats out the dull Camry and lifeless Honda Accord, even though the Accord is quicker. #8230;#8230;. and please give us a turbo version or a 6 cylinder option, we really don#8217;t mind which. OR wait for the diesel, because that is a thumping amount of torque and we like that!
