What#8217;s Not Good

2014 Lexus IS 350: 8.5 out of 10 Thanks to Lexus El Cajon

The 2014 Lexus IS 350 has been     a long time coming, 8 years to be exact. The 2nd generation IS was a decent car, it just didn#8217;t really have a lot of soul. The new one is a much better car, however, Lexus missed the opportunity to give it new engines, which is a shame considering how good this new one is.

  F-Sport models add a full honeycomb grille insert, while the rest use horizontal bars. The profile looks a lot more aggressive#8230;.think Darth Vader#8230;. but we don#8217;t like it. so we drove the standard IS 350. It#8217;s also more expensive and has the same engine.

The F-Sport package is offered on all trims for around $3K. It adds the horrible front bumper, LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, front sport seats, and a more aggressive sport-tuned suspension. We just don#8217;t think it is worth it as the standard drives so bloody well.

The IS has the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as the old model with  306 hp @ 6400 rpm, 277 lb-ft @ 4800, mated to an Eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic transmission with paddle-shifters. Unlike some we don#8217;t pine for manuals when it just isn#8217;t necessary. Yes, the Fiesta ST needs one, this car doesn#8217;t.

Get over it!

0-60 comes up in 5.6 seconds . a tad slower than the competition #8230;#8230;having said that it is a very enjoyable drive. The quarter mile comes up in 13.6 secs and with with a light right foot you should get EPA city/highway driving: 19–21/26–30 mpg.

This Lexus isn#8217;t as sporty as a BMW 335i, but it#8217;s improved dynamics make it really fun to drive. There#8217;s minimal body roll, if you pick the Sport setting. In the F Sport you get Sport +#8230;. we#8217;re not so sure  it#8217;s worth it.

The Sport mode offers rev matching on downshifts and is about as smooth as you will find anywhere.

This Lexus is so much better than the outgoing model, it scythes into corners, and on the exit is always in the right gear to power out. It does exhibit some mild under steer if you carry to much speed coming to a corner but back off the power and it comes back into line.

It#8217;s certainly not the tail happy hooligan that the Infiniti Q50S Hybrid is.

Lexus uses the old IS’s front suspension design but adds a larger anti-roll bar, and it has adapted the multi-link setup from the new GS at the back. The steering is fluid and accurate and the car is balanced and easily controlled with the throttle. Its still not as good as the BMW but they are getting very close.

We love the Electrostatic climate control switches, they add a certain flair to the cabin. Seats are excellent, even better in the F Sport, and the quality of the interior is flawless. The only gripe is the the navigation screen is partially obscured by the dash and is too far away.

We liked the touch screen on the GS better.

Active safety tech such as Lane Departure Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert can now be had if  you tick the right boxes.

This is a very good car and in our opinion puts it ahead of the pack. New engines would have been nice#8230;..maybe Lexus has that planned for a mid term refresh#8230;..lets hope.

What would we do?

Pay the extra and get a BMW 335i or an Audi S4. Don#8217;t get me wrong this is a great car, beautifully made, great chassis, but it is crying out for more power. I think Lexus missed an opportunity to teach BMW a lesson.
