The 2014 Kia Sorento, redesigned from the previous model year, has earned a perfect 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The new score improves on the previous Sorento, which was given a 4-star overall rating.

“Built on an all-new platform, the redesigned Sorento utilizes Kia’s advanced safety equipment and technologies to provide a high level of occupant protection for drivers and their families as measured by the U.S. government,” said Orth Hedrick, executive director of product planning at Kia Motors America. “Already a compelling entry in the compact CUV category, earning a 5-star rating from the NHTSA makes the Sorento an even stronger contender within its segment while underscoring Kia’s overall commitment to delivering safety and exceptional value to our customers.”

NHTSA standards test the safety of a car through three tests: front impact, side impact, and rollover testing. The 2013 Sorento score a perfect 5-star rating in the difficult side impact test, but only managed four stars in the frontal impact and rollover tests. As a result, the 2013 Sorento was given an overall score of 4/5 stars.

The new Sorento’s redesign gave it the extra safety to earn it the final score in the NHTSA testing. The 2014 model improved its rating for frontal impact to a perfect 5/5 score, and retains its 5/5 side impact test score. With the rollover test still at a 4/5, the results were enough to upgrade the 2014 Kia Sorento to a 5-star overall crash test rating.

Additionally, the 2014 Sorento was named a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Sorento is Kia’s best selling crossover, and for the 2014 model year switched to an all-new platform. The new Sorento features a new V6 and more interior space. New features include heated front and rear seats, panoramic sunroof, power lift gate, and a voice-activated eServices system.

The 2014 Kia Sorento is built in West Point, Georgia at the Kia manufacturing facility. The fast growing Korean automaker has invested $1.4 billion into the U.S. market over the past decade. Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia has created more than 14,000 jobs, and is responsible for building the Kia Sorento and Kia Optima.
