2013 Volkswagen Golf Review

If there has ever been a really promising vehicle in the vast lineup of VW Group, it is the upcoming 2013 VW Golf. which was unveiled at the last Paris Auto Show.

About the New 2013 VW Golf

About the New 2013 VW Golf

The launch of the new Golf clearly showed that VW did manage to shed few pounds off from the older model.

With the latest Polo and Golf, the automaker is pushing hard to reach the target of surpassing Toyota and making Volkswagen the world’s number one car brand by 2018.

The Good and the Bad

The best part about the vehicle is its outstanding construction both on the inside and on the outside. The cabin is amazingly spacious and so are the back seats. Though all the engine options are fuel economic, the bad part is that the diesel engine is rather costly for a hatchback.

The unrefined gasoline engine is yet another drawback.

Noteworthy Changes

The next generation Golf has unique styling cues to differentiate it from the rest of vehicles in the brand’s lineup. You get to see lower and wider dimensions as well as edgier bodywork. Its overall length, including wheelbase grew slightly in order to provide more interior space.

As for the features, there are innovative packages, including eight-in touch screen on top of the center console, providing navigation, radio controls, and in-car Internet access, just like iPhone or iPad.

Compared to the previous Golf models, the 2013 model year is distinguished by larger alloy wheels and side skirts. The GTI trim gets unique front grille, plaid seats, and smoked lights.

Both floor and roof of the car are made of aluminum and it also benefits from an electronic power steering system.

A versatile and more powerful Golf R is expected to arrive soon and will shed pounds further by adopting carbon fiber body. 2013 VW Golf R will be marketed in three packages namely R-Line Exterior, R-Line Interior and R-Line Sport.

Engine Choices

It is adaptable to a number of alternative power-trains; power comes from a turbocharged direct-injected 2.0-L gasoline 4-cylinder engine with output as high as 300hp in AWD system. It is modestly faster than the outgoing model due to increase in power and lighter body structure.

It is designed to carry hybrid or battery units; a plug-in hybrid Twin-Drive Golf can cover 372 miles and this edition will make its debut after 2014.

If the rumors are to be believed, it’ll also get an all-new diesel engine that will meet Euro 6 emission standards and production is likely to start from 2014.

A standard 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed dual clutch gearbox drives the front wheels via VW’s VAQ electronically controlled limited slip differential, which is designed to provide ‘more agile steering’ performance.

Driving Impression

The driving of the vehicle is as smooth as it gets as even at the highways speeds the cabin remains surprisingly quiet. The real fun kicks in when you drive the new Gold around the curvy roads as you would instantly feel the confidence that the steering of the vehicle infuses in you. The turbo-charged engine offers plenty of low rev torque that can easily satisfy any kind of power hungry driver.

The outgoing version of Golf achieves a fantastic mileage of 24 mpg in city limits, and 33 mpg on the highways, and the present 2013 model also maintains the same fuel economy figure. That being said, the variant with 2.0 liter TDI engine offers 30 city/42 hwy mpg, which is a great improvement compared to the older model.

With a bigger line of features, more up class refinement and performance inclined engines the new Golf 2013 does once again become one of the best hatchback picks.
