2013 Volvo C30 Polestar: The Review

There are many cars on the roads these Cars you see in line at Taco waiting for a Doritos Locos that cause you to take a and think to yourself oh yeah, still a thing! The Volvo C30 is one of cars and, perhaps for reason, this is the last they’ll sell it here.

never forget the Volvo C30 though.

( Full Disclosure . wanted me to drive the C30 Polestar so bad they brought it by the office, I spent a weekend flinging it Northern New Jersey. People on the probably thought it was just a Smurf.)

In the ’90s and ’00s, applied a little badge said ‘R’ to a number of but the important ones were Sweet, sweet, turbocharged But towards the end of the decade, Volvo there would be no more cars.

I was sad.

But then the mad at Polestar came to the rescue. first cars were concepts that would hit production, but this limited C30 (only 250 are coming to America) is a mild tune (power is up to 250 HP, 273 and subtle graphics/sticker package.

Those small improvements its price to the edge of VW Golf R, and Evo territory. It has the appearances of a fun car, but is it that high price of For a lot of people, it really isn’t a choice.

But, for certain it’s the only car they buy.

S Exterior 8/10

I the C30 incredibly attractive. Seriously. swooping lines, lots of and clever little rear

It’s just glass you open it up, which is far better opening the entire rear end of a car for purposes. It pays homage to the ES in its shoulder line and hatch, is wonderful.

The only shortcoming is I the front a little over-styled.

may have taken the word a little too literally, because the car like it’s constantly and shocked that it’s on the road, driving around.

I also note that for the time since I’ve cars, I got into an accident the C30 Polestar. And by accident, I mean I was hit in the quarter panel when I was 3/4 of the way an intersection. Not my fault, but it … a

Good news is that the was still drivable and it lives up to its reputation.

S Interior 7/10

In of interior design, the C30 is like into a very cool design museum. It’s and uncluttered. There’s the super floating center console, delicate buttons, blue I initially looked at the charcoal and seats and thought that were awful. Seriously (Should note that I had to a shot from Volvo for the and this isn’t the interior of the car I

Volvo didn’t have any of it on their media site. all around.)

But then I sat in them, and around. I can’t imagine that would match the better.

There is also a lot of which makes the Volvo open and airy; It’s a pleasant place to be. But for some outward visibility just there, at least out of the sides. I the wee-little mirrors have to do with it.

S Acceleration 7/10

So the has 250 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, is only delivered to two of the wheels. And the front wheels. Asking wheels to deal with, any power, is a recipe for a torque pie.

And every time you get behind the and step on the gas, the ‘vo you a fresh slice of it. I’ve cars that are way worse this with less though, so it isn’t the worst in the world.

Supposedly the Polestar a lot more power than is saying too. I’d it, because once you get used to the of torque, this thing In a straight line, it’s damn sprightly with a little warble out of the tailpipes.

is a little turbo lag, so a gear or two is a big help.

Polestar performance, so I was expecting something rode like it had solid Instead, it was unexpectedly comfortable. I appreciated that on the highway and town, I figured it might be a bit of a when it came to handling.

S 5/10

…and I was very Let’s start at the top, we? The steering is super light and numb. You turn the wheel and the car where you point it, but there is feel.

I’ve eaten yams more steering feel the ‘vo.

Once you’re to the steering, throw it into a I mean really throw it. be greeted by an unwillingness to turn can only be rivaled by Margaret Understeer is the default, and only, for the C30.

It’s a tough car to fast, just because it communicating to you through the wheel.

For a car is a special, performance edition, expect the steering feel to be on, especially when a company builds race cars is the process.

S Braking 6/10

you ever been cleaning house and accidentally stepped on a No? Well, go step on a sponge quick and then come I’ll be here.

Did it? That’s the brakes are like in the C30. soft. They aren’t but they’re soft. Which is too

S Gearbox 5/10

So the handling and aren’t that great. But holding out hope for the gearbox.

While the shift action isn’t awful (although the are a bit long and vague) this biggest issue is the clutch. A clutch feels analog.

It has a engagement point and comes on

The ‘vo has a vague digital I found it tough to make any of a smooth take off without a ton of Quick shifts were on impossible since you can’t where the clutch engages.

you’re lucky and nail it on, most times you aren’t to getting it right.

The driving of the Polestar, a car I’d been forward to for months, was a let down. really disappointed me.

S Audio

But hey! It had a really bangin’ If Polestar wants to get into tuning, then please, be my It sounded great.

And the turbo cylinder has this nice guttural sound. It isn’t or obnoxious, but it lets you know there.

The Volvo has nav, radio, iPod connectivity, etc.

That’s not the issue, the nav system is pretty awful.

The comes with how they The interior design, which I by as lovely, makes the toys impossible to use. For instance, the nav is in two ways. There are controls ON THE OF THE STEERING WHEEL that you see.

There is also a remote control like you for a TV. Seriously. Come on.

The center stack also has of tightly placed buttons, made them nearly to touch without taking eyes off the road for a long to discern what you need to So… Design: High marks. Not so high.

S Value 5/10

another conundrum. The C30 Polestar is not In fact, it’s rather As equipped, the ‘vo is $35,545. are a lot of other cars you can get for that

There are also a lot of better you can get for that money. This is not a proposition.

But Volvo buyers always been a unique much like Saab They like cars are different from the norm. The C30 is different. It’s not better it’s competitors. If you buy this it’s because you want car, and only this

It’s the perfect car for the Volvo but it might not be perfect for anyone
