2013 Skoda Octavia – Is it Simply Clever?

Skoda has fired off an ambitious aim, of getting rid of the well-off Laura, and replacing it with a new car which was actually replaced by the Laura! The question is was the Skoda Octavia ever gone? The answer is No, it wasn’t. The first gen Octavia was sold in India under the same name, but the second gen Octavia was for some reason sold under the name of Laura, and now the company has revived the same old name, Octavia.

And quite evidently, they felt the need to do so.

Laura was a good nice package of good looks, luxurious interiors, a powerful engine and a good enough brand name, but somehow the car couldn’t ever kick in. Since the launch of Chevrolet Cruze in India, no car has been able to compete with it, and Hyundai Elantra’s entry to the segment has spiced up the competition for the top spot while all others can only dream of reining the segment.

There was a desperate need of a facelift for the Laura, as all other competitors were either new or were a facelifted version. The car was certainly good but could never match the aura of the Octavia.

The new gen 2013 Skoda Octavia was launched worldwide in December’12 and it’s in India within 8 months, which is quite a good progress. The other reason for its quick entry into the Indian market was Skoda’s recent aim of getting into the worldwide top 10 selling cars list with its new Octavia, and they cannot do it without selling large amounts in India.

On the outside, the looks are pretty good and subtle, which is visible in all the cars made by Skoda. The old boxy Skoda designing is back in this Octavia and the trademark grill is also present. There is a striking similarity between the Rapid and the Octavia’s tail end. Both the cars have similar C-shaped taillights, and the crease garnish around the number plate is also similar. Overall Skoda hasn’t experimented with the looks and the shape of the car.

There are very clean creases along the side of the car. Skoda is also offering many other exterior packages like, bi xenon headlamps with dynamic levelling.

The interiors are nicely thought and planned. The interiors sport similarity with the other Skoda’s like Superb and the Rapid. The same beige and brown colour combination is visible. Though Skoda is a Czech automaker, but there is a certain German-ness about the interiors being simple, classy and luxurious at the same time.

Along with the competitors, it has to fight its cousin in Volkswagen Jetta.

The Skoda-Volkswagen partnership can be seen in this car as well, as the cars share the same engine block as well. The 1.4L TSI petrol engine on the offer is the same which we find in the Jetta, though it is firing 18 more horsepower in the Octavia at 140HP. There are two other engine options, a bigger 1.8L turbo petrol engine (180BHP and 250NM torque) and a 2.0L diesel engine (143BHP and 320NM torque), which will account for the maximum sales.

The most exciting options looks to be the 1.8L petrol as it won’t be having the harshness and the lag of a diesel engine as the petrol is more refined, more powerful and much more active on the throttle (as there is no lag!). Automatic transmission is being offered in both 1.8L petrol and 2.0L diesels, but the lack of paddle shifters is a big let-down.

The 2013 Skoda Octavia is lighter than the previous version by 102Kgs. The shredded weight along with an improved engine accounts for an increased mileage for both petrol and diesel versions. Then there is an added feature list which includes, an electronic differential lock, ESP, parking sensors at the front and rear, auto dimming inside and outside rear view mirrors, ASR, auto wipers, six airbags, tire pressure monitoring, cruise control, a cooled glove box, retractable headlamp washers, a cornering function that uses the fog lamps, and auto headlamps. Certainly Skoda is giving all it’s got to fight the competitors.

The new Octavia is certainly an excellent product, it has been launched at 13.95Lacs (ex-showroom Delhi) and goes on till 20Lacs. It has been well priced but certainly feels costlier at the higher end, compared to the likes of Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. Cruze and Elantra are well placed in the market.

Along with performance, it needs a bit of luck to fight for the top spot!
