2013 Mercedes SLS AMG GT gets a gullwing-door lift: Motoramic Dash

This is the Motoramic Dash, a daily roundup of the most interesting news in the automotive world.

Starting later this year, Mercedes will refresh its most expensive sports car with this, the 2013 Mercedes SLS AMG GT, with a little power boost, a few nicer details and the gullwing doors that give the $200,000 car its historical cachet. For that money, you#39;ll always be able to hit 60 mph in under four seconds.

Mercedes engineers boosted the AMG 6.3-liter V8 by 20 hp to 583 hp, keeping max torque at 479 lb.-ft, lowering 0-60 times to 3.6 seconds and setting a top speed of 197 mph. The car could do more, but that#39;s where the engineers set the electronic limiter to avoid the need for even more exotic tires.

Mercedes also upgraded the 7-speed automatic for quicker shifts, and gave the adjustable suspension reworking for a wider envelope of handling, but if you#39;re in the market for such a car you#39;re probably not fussing over whether there#39;s a #34;Sport Plus#34; setting on the dash. Through May, Mercedes has sold 473 copies of the previous SLS AMG coupe and roadster, an impressive showing. It#39;s the one vehicle that faces little competition from Audi and BMW, and the SLS AMG GT aims to keep it that way.

Other stories from around the automotive world this morning:

Romney vows quick U.S. exit from GM : Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney made his plans for the auto industry a little clearer in a new interview with The Detroit News, saying if elected he#39;d immediately sell the government#39;s 26 percent stake in General Motors and maybe ease up on tougher new fuel economy standards for cars and trucks. Right now the government is $16 billion in the hole on GM, and selling its stake willy-nilly would only increase those losses, but Romney says GM needs to be #34;run for the interests of the consumer and the enterprise and its workers — not for the political considerations of government officials.#34; (Detroit News )

Audi U.S. chief to head Infiniti: Johan de Nysschen left Audi in a hurry last week, and will now be tasked with making Infiniti a true global luxury brand, something it hasn#39;t been able to accomplish so far. The weirdest bit of news: de Nysschen will work from Infiniti#39;s global headquarters in that automotive epicenter, Hong Kong. That#39;s one way to show you#39;re focused on China — have it visible from the office window. (Wall St. Journal )

Nissan cuts Leaf lease prices to goose sales: The low-end Nissan Leaf can now be leased for $289 a month, a $90 cut following sluggish sales through the first half of this year that are a fraction of Nissan#39;s 20,000-car target. The higher-end SL model with the optional quick charger will go for $319 a month. (Plug In Cars )
