2013 Mercedes-Benz G-class/G550/G63 AMG Features

If you want to find out what the miniscule changes have been made to the exterior, we will save you the effort. The three most significant changes the exterior gets are:outside rear view mirrors get embedded turn signals; the AMG version gets a new grille and bumpers; and LED running lights.

The brochure for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz G550 describes the SUV as “crafted by hand, untouched by time.” The second assertion is true. The styling of the G-class has remain largely unchanged ever since it was introduced as a bare bones light military vehicle more than three decades back.

Along with the undisturbed exterior looks, the interior of the 2013 G-class was looking very dated and it had to be brought up to speed . Mercedes-Benz has done just and now the G-class cabin looks at home in the 21st century. The dashboard and central console is completely new and it gets a multi-functional color screen, which sits in the middle of the instrument cluster.

On the central stack sits the COMAND infotainment display, which moves to the top of the stack in the 2013 G-class and to control the display#8217;s functions there is a controller, which sits behind the gear shift lever on the central stack. The cabin also has the state-of-the-art mbrace2 telematics system.

There might be people reading this and thinking the G has become soft. Far from it, guys! On top of the central stack there is a row of switches for the differential lock, which makes them easy to operate and though not many owners operate them, they sure look quite cool.

The thick grab handle on the passenger side has survived and so has the pinched-leather coverings for the door panels, but the gauges and the steering wheel are new.

The naturally aspirated 5500cc V8 powerplant, producing 382hp and the accompanying 7-speed automatic transmission on the G550 have been retained for the 2013 model.

In the AMG version, the outgoing G55#8242;s supercharged 5400cc V8 has been junked and in its place comes the 5500cc V8 powerplant. Power output, which the G55 has in plenty, goes up by 44hp to 544hp and ditto torque too as it increases by 44 units to a tree-stump-pulling 560lb/ft.

Like it is the norm on other Mercedes-Benz AMG models having down-sized V8 engines, the “63” in G63 is not a pointer to the displacement of the engine under its hood.

Fuel economy is given a priority by most AMG customers so the G63 gets a stop/start system called “Eco”. To further the cause of good mileage, the G63 is now fitted with a 7-speed automatic transmission in place of the 5-speed unit on the G55.

When we tested the 2011 G55 recently . it accelerated from 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds, which is very respectable for an SUV but the mileage we got was only 12mpg. So, we don#8217;t think the G63 will be more economical but we are definitely very keen to see how the additional muscle under its hood will affect it#8217;s already goose-pimples-inducing performance.

If some of you think a G63 with 544 horses is mildish, then have a look at what markets other than the US are going to get. There Mercedes-Benz will be debuting the new G65 AMG which has a 6000cc twin-turbo V12 monster under its hood, capable of churning out 604hp and an insane torque output of 738lb/ft.

But the G65 won#8217;t make it to American shores as the effort needed to certify it for the market here will not be worth it given the small volumes it will sell. The big V12 engine was fitted with much difficulty under the hood and so it would not meet the crash standards prevalent in the US.

Without any doubt, the 2013 G550 and the G63 will have the full off-road paraphernalia, which will include the aforementioned locking differentials and also low range transfer case.

Other standard equipment on the 2013 G-class will include blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, rearview camera and back up sensors. And finally the G-class has programmed trailer stabilizing function into the stability control system.

2013 Mercedes-Benz G-class/G550/G63 AMG Price

The pricing structure of the 2013 G550 and G63 hasn#8217;t been announced by Mercedes-Benz but it did disclose that the both vehicles will hit dealerships in August.

According to our estimates, the price of the G550 will not increase that much over what the outgoing model cost — $108,860. But the 2013 G63 will certainly cost more than the $125,330 Mercedes-Benz asked for the 2012 G55.
