Lexus GS Hybrid Review

The 2013 Lexus GS Hybrid ranks 7 out of 14 Luxury Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Lexus GS Hybrid, as well as reliability and safety data.

The 2013 Lexus GS Hybrid is ranked:

The 2013 Lexus GS Hybrid offers all the luxury of the gas-only GS. but ups the ante with excellent fuel economy and more power.

Auto reviewers agree that the redesigned 2013 Lexus GS Hybrid is a significant improvement compared with the outgoing 2011 model. The old GS Hybrid wasn’t a bad car, but as the previous generation neared the end of its life cycle, newer competitors offered better fuel economy and more style, often at a lower price.

Lexus took notice, and the new 2013 GS Hybrid now boasts a stylish, comfortable interior, fresh sheet metal and a significant bump in fuel economy. Edmunds writes, “This is an improved GS hybrid for sure, if not in pure drivability then in terms of interior quality, design and definitely handling due to the standard-issue adaptive suspension.”

The GS Hybrid hasn’t traded horsepower for fuel efficiency, either. Lexus claims it’s a bit faster than the non-hybrid Lexus GS in a 0 to 60 mph sprint, and while reviewers love the power, their views on the GS Hybrid’s handling and braking capabilities differ. The GS Hybrid also offers comfortable seats and a decent-sized trunk.

However, a few reviewers say that the available navigation system takes some time to get used to.

Despite these concerns, test drivers say the 2013 Lexus GS Hybrid offers a blend of luxury, power and efficiency that’s difficult to match.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re shopping for a hybrid sedan that’s powerful and luxurious, consider the Infiniti M Hybrid. Like the GS Hybrid, reviewers love the M’s high-quality interior, but it offers a slight tradeoff when it comes to performance. Although the M Hybrid is more powerful than the GS, its fuel economy estimates are slightly lower.

Hybrids are generally more expensive than their gas-only siblings, and the BMW 528i is a good option if you don’t want to fork out the extra cash for a hybrid badge. The 528i also offers a luxurious interior and excellent fuel economy, but sets itself apart with top safety scores and optional all-wheel drive.

Lexus GS Hybrid: The Details

The 2013 Lexus GS Hybrid has been completely redesigned and comes in one well-equipped trim: the GS 450h. A V6 engine and two electric motors power the rear wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The gas-only Lexus GS 350 is reviewed separately.

Any Lexus GS is comfortable, reasonably sporty, and tastefully finished. The powertrains are smooth and strong, and the brand’s traditionally top-notch customer care offers appeal as well. — Consumer Guide Last, but certainly not least, is the 450h, which I found to be the most significant GS. Smoother, quieter, quicker, and more seamless than its predecessor, the 450h is an impressive engineering feat, offering the power and speed of the previous V-8 GS 460 combined with the fuel economy of the current 1.8-liter Corolla. — Motor Trend I still don’t believe hybrids are a good fit for a luxury model like this. While the Lexus CT 200h compact hatchback is a neat package, dropping a hybrid powertrain into a larger car like the GS yields mileage gains in a segment where shoppers don’t worry as much about pain at the pump. — Cars.com The fuel economy was clearly the thing about the GS 450h that impressed us most, but the hybrid also benefits from all the styling, interior and chassis upgrades afforded the standard GS 350. — Autoblog
