2013 Jaguar XF

New engines and all-wheel drive give the XF more range.

For the past five years, the Jaguar XF has been a one-trick pony, serving up nothing but V-8s and rear-wheel drive in a luxury market that demanded more. Competitors with more variants were sending the XF to the glue factoryor whatever factory processes endangered species for use in adhesives. Now, finally, Jaguar’s stylish sedan will have the engine range and all-wheel drive it needs to better compete; the latter is a non-negotiable prerequisite to sell luxury cars in the northeastern United States.

Turbo Four, Super Six, and a Killer V-8

The entry-level XF now comes with a 240-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. An eight-speed automatic transmission handles the 251 lb-ft of torque, and rear-wheel drive is the only setup available. Jaguar estimates a 0-to-60 time of 7.5 seconds, a number that seems far too conservative to us.

When last we tested a 240-hp BMW 528i. which uses the same ZF gearbox as the Jag, it laid down a 5.9-second run. Considering that the XF is a claimed 200 pounds lighter than the BMW, we hope to see much quicker performance than Jaguar is suggesting.

At $47,850, the XF 2.0T would seem like a good value. On its own, it is. But a mere $3025not a lot more than a rear-seat refrigerator in a Porsche Panamerais all it takes to buy an XF with another 100 horses.

A new supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 makes 340 hp and 332 lb-ft. That’s a bit of a downgrade from the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 that this engine replaces, which was rated at 385 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. But the XF 3.0 Supercharged comes with an eight-speed auto rather than the old V-8’s sixand the new car is about $6000 cheaper than the outgoing XF 5.0.

The crown jewel of this entire XF revamp, however, is the availability of all-wheel drive for the V-6 model. “Why,” you may be wondering, “is this a big deal at all?” Simply put, shoppers in the Snowbelt won’t consider a car if it doesn’t have all-wheel drive. According to data gurus RL Polk, 88 percent of BMW 5-series buyers in cold-weather states spec their cars with all-wheel drive; the same is true for the Mercedes-Benz E-class. Ninety-one percent of S-classes sold in cold states have all-wheel drive. Last year, the 5-series outsold the XF nearly 10 to 1.

The XF’s supercharged V-8 engine carries over, still making 470 hp in the XF Supercharged and 510 in the XFR ; neither V-8powered model will be available with all-wheel drive. Both get the new eight-speed transmission, though, and the XFR will be offered with an optional Speed Pack, which raises the top speed from 155 mph to a far-more-useful 174. The Speed pack also adds new front and rear spoilers and, in Jaguar’s vague words, “suspension and aerodynamic enhancements.”
