Exterior Features

The all-new 2013 BMW M5 is equipped with 19-inch aluminum wheels and styling modified from the standard 5 Series. Adaptive xenon headlights with LED corona-ring running lights illuminate the way forward, while the rear of the car features LED taillights and adaptive brake lights.

Interior Features

The 2013 M5 includes premium Merino extended leather, unique aluminum cabin trim, Alcantara upholstery roof liner, M steering wheel with M Drive buttons to select pre-configured driving modes, and 20-way M sports seats. Additional standard features include iDrive navigation with a 10.2-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, climate zone ventilation that allows different temperature settings for the upper and lower zones of the car, power moonroof, and a 500-watt audio system with HD radio.

Optional Features

The 2013 M5 can be upgraded with 20-inch wheels, BMW Individual custom tailoring options, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, Bang Olufsen high-end surround-sound system, BMW Apps smartphone integration, and a configurable head-up display.

Under the Hood


Standard in the M5 is a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V-8 engine delivering 560 horsepower between 5,750 and 7,000 rpm and 500 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm. It is paired with a 7-speed M-Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) with Drivelogic, which feeds power to the rear wheels through an Active M Differential. BMW quotes a zero-to-60 mph acceleration time of 4.3 seconds.

The M-DCT transmission features automatic and manual modes, and can be manually shifted using either the gear selector or shift paddles mounted to the steering wheel. Each mode includes 3 driving programs, for a total of 6. The sportiest mode must be engaged to use the M5’s Launch Control system.

Automatic stop/start technology is standard. Also standard are M Driving Dynamics Control with Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus settings for the M Dynamic Damping Control, M-tuned steering, and other adjustable vehicle technologies.

Fuel Economy

The EPA had not established final fuel-economy estimates for the BMW M5 when this overview was written.


In addition to 6 air bags, the 2013 BMW M5 is equipped with Dynamic Stability Control with an M Dynamic mode. Additionally, the M-specific, high-performance compound-rotor anti-lock brakes feature Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Brake Control, Brake Assistant, Brake Drying, brake-fade compensation, and start-off assistant.

Also standard are BMW Assist with automatic crash notification, front and rear park distance control, reversing camera, and Dynamic Cruise control, Optional features include a lane-departure warning system, Night Vision with pedestrian detection, active blind-spot monitoring system, and Surround View cameras.

The 2013 BMW M5 had not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when this overview was written.
