Experts Release Conflicting Best Green Automobiles Ranking Lists and Reviews

Updated April 24, 2013

Green marketing, green products, and a green image are trends that retailers of all types continue to use, and which consumers are continuing to buy in ever increasing numbers. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the retail auto showroom where green options were almost non-existent five years ago, but are plentiful today.

The growing emphasis on selling green cars doesn’t just impact retail auto dealerships. As green car sales continue, new retail operations will be born to meet the demands of auxiliary products and services that cater specifically to green vehicles.

Consumer interest in green automobiles is not growing at a meteoric rate, but it is definitely growing. The Green Car Congress reported that more than 17,000 plug-in vehicles were sold in the first quarter of 2013. Toyota and Lexus reported an 82.3% increase in their 2013 Q1 Hybrid Sales.

In April 2013, three separate reports were released which designated the best green automobiles of 2013. The fact that there are enough different models of green cars to populate a top ten list is evidence that green marketing of green cars is on an upward trajectory. The fact that the three lists don’t even contain the same best green vehicles is evidence that automakers are taking the future of green vehicles seriously.

What follows are the Best 2013 Green Cars lists that were created by GreenerCars.org, Kelly Blue Book, and Consumer Reports. The numbers in the left column represent the ranking numbers that were assigned assigned to each vehicle by the judges who compiled the list.

GreenerCars.org – 10 Greenest Cars to Buy in 2013

When compiling its 10 Greenest Cars to Buy list for 2013, Greener Cars.org used tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption and gas emissions that effect climate change as their criteria for judgement. The list is ranked from one to ten, with the cars that make the least environmental impact at the top of the list.

1) Toyota Prius C

2) Honda Fit EV

3) Toyota Pirus

4) Toyota Pirus Plug-In Hybrid

5) Honda Civic Hybrid

6) Honda Insight

7) Volkswagn Jetta Hybrid

8) Mercedes-Benz Smart

9) Scion iQ

10) Ford Focus Electric

Kelly Blue Book – 10 Best Green Cars of 2013

The Kelly Blue Book (KBB) list of best green cars doesn’t include any information about a standard set of criteria that was used to judge the hybrid and plug-in electric vehicles that are included on the list. This is especially curious since the list uses ranking numbers.

The outstanding qualities of the KBB #1 pick for best 2013 green car are range, practicality, refinement and value. Perhaps this was the criteria used for all vehicles on the KBB top ten list, or perhaps the auto manufacturing advertising dollars had some influence. It’s impossible to know based on the information that KBB provided with the publishing of the list.
