September 3, 2011

A lengthened version of the Grand Vitara SUV, the 2012 Suzuki XL 7 is a midsize SUV. It has a 12.1-inch longer wheelbase, 19.1 inches more overall length, and is powered by a supersized version Grand Vitara#8217;s V6. XL 7 offers rear-wheel drive or 4WD for offroad. The XL 7 offers manual or automatic transmissions and a lower end climbing gear.

Two trim packages are offered, Touring and Limited models, both of which accommodate 5 passenger seating, or seven with an optional third row seat. ABS is standard on Limited, optional on Touring. The purpose of our monthly 2012 Suzuki XL 7 review is to provide you with the latest specs, information and Suzuki XL 7 pictures to help your research for a new car.

Suzuki introduced the XL 7 in 2001 as a solution to those not comfortable in larger SUVs. The 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara XL 7 bargain offers perks that others in its class do not offer, including smaller size and seven passenger seating.

Both trim models of the Suzuki Grand Vitara XL 7 bargain are powered by a 2.7 liter engine producing 183-horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission are available on the Touring model, while an automatic only is available on the Limited. Towing capacity is 3,000 pounds.

The XL 7 comes standard with antilock brakes, but side impact airbags are not yet available. The XL 7 earned a #8220;Good#8221; overall score from the IIHS for the 40-mph frontal offset crash test. As of the posting of this 2012 Suzuki XL 7 review, the NHTSA had not tested the XL 7, though the regular Grand Vitara has been given four stars (out of a possible five) for driver and front-passenger protection in frontal impacts.

Of the two available trim models, Touring and Limited, the base Touring model is equipped with power door locks, mirrors and windows; remote keyless entry; cruise control; automatic climate control; daytime running lights; adjustable center armrest with CD storage; a seven-speaker stereo system with an in-dash CD player; integrated stereo controls and cruise controls on the steering wheel; 12-volt accessory outlet; aluminum wheels; and tinted privacy glass. The base XL 7 equipped with the third-row option adds a rear air conditioning switch in the center console and rear air vents.

The Limited model gets all the above plus running boards, four-wheel ABS, leather seating, heated mirrors, a power sunroof and an in-dash six-CD changer. Of all the 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara XL 7 bargain accessories and features we have reviewed, the optional third-row seating, puts the XL 7 ahead of the other small SUVs. This feature does not become available until you start looking at the large size SUVs. XL 7#8242;s legroom in this position is fairly confined however, and this row is probably more suitable for smaller occupants.

This is a practical consideration when you are loading up your XL 7 with gear and kids for a long trip. This model compares very well with the other members of this class.
