2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Overview

2012 is a big year for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class of compact-luxury cars, with a brand new body style and a slew of interior/exterior upgrades that are sure to make buyers happy.

For the first time, the C-Class is now offered in a two-door coupe body style to go along with the more traditional four-door sedan. The C250, C350, and C63 are all available as coupes, the only exception being the C300 4MATIC which only comes as a sedan. Exterior updates for 2012 include new taillights, horizontal LED running lights above the front bumper, and a grille that is similar to the one found on the E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz names the C-Class models based on the engines that they have. The C250 starts things off and has a new 201-horsepower, turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder. Next, the C300 4MATIC features a 228-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 while the C350 steps things up to a 302-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 that’s an improvement of 34-horsepower compared to last year’s model. Topping things off is the high-performance C63 AMG.

While the other variants of the C-Class combine comfort, luxury, and performance, the C63 AMG goes straight for speed, as evidenced by the 451-horsepower V-8 that is found under the hood. Each of the models is rear-wheel drive, save the C300 4MATIC which has all-wheel drive, and come with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel efficiency has improved thanks to a few new engines and a few other adjustments. The C250 and its new, efficient mill lead the pack at 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. At the bottom is the C63 AMG and its fuel hungry V-8 at 13 mpg/city and 19 mpg/highway.

Note that the C-Class does require premium gas.

The compact-luxury segment is a very competitive one; the C-Class goes directly up against cars like the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Lexus IS250/350, and Infiniti G37. In order to keep up, Mercedes-Benz has thankfully given the 2012 C-Class some notable improvements that keep it at the top of the totem pole.

Interior materials have been improved and trim choices such as brushed aluminum, black ash, and matte-finished walnut wood. The center console has been redesigned with metallic buttons and a simple, yet elegant design that combines form and function nicely. It also features a standard 5.8-inch LCD screen that displays audio, hands-free calling, and

Standard interior features include power door mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, integrated HomeLink remote system, auxiliary and USB audio ports, HD radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. There are also plenty of tech and luxury upgrades available, including leather upholstery, 10GB of music storage, seat memory, and Mercedes’ COMAND hard-drive navigation system that includes services like Zagat surveys for restaurants.

This being a Mercedes, it’s no surprise that it comes with some of latest safety technology out there. Standard safety features include 11-way air bag protection, electronic stability, adaptive antilock brakes, and ATTENTION ASSIST, which detects when drivers become drowsy and prompts audio/visual warnings. Other available safety tech includes a rear view camera, adaptive highbeams, blind spot assist, lane keeping assist, and a parking guidance system that will let you know if a parallel parking space is large enough to fit your vehicle and then help to guide you into it.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class effortlessly combines luxury, premium technical amenities, and performance into a seamless package that is sure to leave smiles on the faces of new car buyers everywhere.
