2012 BMW ActiveHybrid X6

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is the latest in hybrid technology from the Bavarian automaker, involving no fewer than two electric motors, one conventional engine, two turbochargers, three planetary gearsets, and a battery. If that all sounds complicated, it is, but it’s worth it: BMW says that the ActiveHybrid gets 20% better fuel economy than a similar-sized SUV.

Plus, it is all done in relative isolation from the drivetrain, so that it’s very difficult to tell which power system is powering the vehicle at any given time. It’s a very good technological improvement, but that doesn’t mean that BMW has deleted options or made concessions with the X6. The 2012 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid remains true to its sports crossover roots.

The X6 helped to redefine the Sports SUV and produce an entirely new class of vehicle. Just like Mercedes Benz with the CLS, which created an entire class of four-door coupes, the X6 is likely to spawn offshoots from competitors.

The X6 ActiveHybrid has a standard 4.4-liter 400 horsepower twin turbocharged V8 engine, along with two electric motors. They can all run together or separately through the use of three separate gearboxes that ensures not only fulltime four-wheel drive but also the best possible fuel economy for any given situation. The main gearbox has seven speeds for a good spread of ratios.

On the safety side the X6 ActiveHybrid comes with Dynamic Stability Control, which includes Brake Fade Compensation, Start-off Assistant, Dynamic Traction Control, and Dynamic Brake Control. What all this means is that the system holds you on the road and helps prevent you from losing traction or braking in all but the most extreme of conditions. If the worst does happen, there are dual front airbags and front- and rear-compartment Head Protection System with front side-impact airbags, helping provide security for all passengers.

On the inside of the 2012 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, you get Nappa leather upholstery, 20-way power adjustable front seats with three-stage heating, four-zone climate control air conditioning for front and rear seat passengers, power moonroof, power tailgate, and rear-view camera with top-down view for added visibility while reversing.

The X6 has already changed the way many people think of sports SUVs, but with the ActiveHybrid the automaker has moved into an even more unique area. The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid is a vehicle that not only has extreme performance, but the best possible fuel economy for that performance.
