2012 Acura RL Review

Research Other Years

The 2012 Acura RL lacks the prestige of pricier sedans, but test drivers agree that the 2012 RL is a great choice for many shoppers.

More often than not, luxury large cars use the panache of their brand to attract shoppers. However, reviewers report that the 2012 Acura RL is not one of those cars. “If you want flashy, scratch the Acura RL off your list,” says Road and Track. “But if your priorities are understated elegance, good power and a balanced chassis, the RL is more than capable of filling the bill.”

While brashly-styled sedans like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Jaguar XF lure shoppers in with their attractive designs, reviewers agree that the RL is a more subdued choice. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Bulletproof reliability, standard all-wheel drive and good resale value are among the RL’s strengths.

However, it does have a few shortcomings.

The RL isn’t the most spacious, and performance-minded shoppers will overlook the RL since it lacks a V8 option. But savvy shoppers may note that while the RL flies under the radar, it’s also a good value. With well-rounded performance and a finely-crafted interior, the 2012 RL has more features than many competing luxury large cars at a significantly lower price.

Other Cars to Consider

Even if you add all-wheel drive to match the RL’s standard features, the Volvo S80 will save you thousands. Reviewers generally agree that the RL is more exciting to drive, but the S80 makes up for that deficit with comfortable seats, more trunk space and excellent crash test scores.

If you’ve got a little extra cash to spend, consider the Infiniti M. Test drivers love the M’s athletic handling and high-quality interior, and like the S80, the M also boasts exceptional safety scores. However, the M doesn’t come standard with all-wheel drive. Expect to shell out some additional cash if you need the M’s optional all-wheel drive system.

Acura RL: The Details

The 2012 Acura RL is offered in one trim level with two available option packages. There are no changes for 2012. The RL comes standard with a V6 engine, automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. See the full 2012 Acura RL specs .

Unchanged for 2012, it’s a tad snug inside and short on excitement versus its larger, more powerful competitors but it’s a stealthy, well-executed alternative to (ahem) livelier sports sedans. — Car and Driver Acura’s own TL gives up some size and a bit of style to the RL in exchange for a more-engaging driving experience at much less cost. — Consumer Guide The Hyundai Genesis is fully competitive in terms of luxury, yet even the 4.6-liter V8 version significantly undercuts the RL on price. Meanwhile, more traditional (and newer) choices like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Infiniti M37 and Mercedes E-Class are either sportier, more prestigious or even both. — Edmunds As flagships go, there seems little to recommend about the Acura RL. No V-8 power, an aging platform, and awkward styling make it easy to overlook, although value conscious consumers who want something different would do well to consider this underdog.” — Motor Trend
