2011 Volvo XC70 Overview

For those who need to transport cargo of any variety, who care about safety, and who need vehicle that is capable of handling almost any conditions, the off-road ready 2011 Volvo XC70 wagon is for you.

Slotting into the Volvo lineup between the V50 wagon and the XC60 small crossover, the 2011 XC70 has two engine options and two trims (3.2 and T6). A 240-horsepower, 3.2-liter inline-six cranks out 236 pounds-feet of torque, while a low-emissions version, which is sold in select states, creates 230 horsepower and 221 pounds-feet of torque. If you desire a little more pop under the hood, a 300-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder produces 325 pounds-feet of torque.

Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with clutchless-manual mode. A new front-wheel drive version of the 3.2 model joins the all-wheel-drive trim (the T6 is AWD only).

In terms of fuel economy, the 2011 Volvo XC70 is very similar to the XC60 with EPA-estimated ratings of 17-18 mpg in the city and 22-25 mpg on the highway. The XC70 competes with the Volkswagen Passat and Subaru Outback for off-road wagon supremacy. One way to differentiate the XC70 from other Volvo wagons and crossovers are the bright fog-light surrounds and dark bumper apron that dips around the lower edge and reaches all the way back to the rear bumper.

The XC70 is not only long at 190.5 inches, but also boasts 8.3-inches of ground clearance. Choose between 16-, 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, while power-operated and heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals and aluminum roof rails are standard. For added convenience, bi-xenon headlights with swiveling lenses, power glass moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, and a power liftgate are optional.

With seating for five occupants, the 2011 Volvo XC70 boasts 33.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 72 cubic feet of cargo space when the 40/20/40 rear folding seat is folded flat. Cloth upholstery, Bluetooth® connectivity, auxiliary input/USB port for your iPod, a leather-clad steering wheel and shift knob, and dual-zone automatic climate control with backseat ventilation come standard, while a power front passenger seat, heated front and rear seats, a 12-speaker surround-sound system, dual-screen entertainment system, and a navigation system with real-time traffic are optional.

The Volvo XC70 goes above and beyond in terms of safety with standard features like front-seat side-impact and side curtain airbags, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, and an electronic stability system with traction control. Adaptive cruise control and a lane departure warning system are optional. Collision Warning with Auto Brake and a blind spot warning system not only warn the driver in the event of an accident, but also applies the brakes if needed.

If the 2011 Volvo XC70 is struck from behind, the whiplash-prevention system cradles front occupants for added protection.

Go anywhere in the off-road capable and supremely safe 2011 Volvo XC70 wagon.
