2011 Porsche Cayman Overview

The 2011 Porsche Cayman adds another variant to its already potent lineup of cars for this year, which gives the Cayman even more bite going forward.

The Cayman is related to the Boxster roadster; the two cars share versions of Porsche’s horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine which is mid-mounted for optimal weight balance. But instead of a soft top, the Cayman features a hard top and has more of a focus on performance than its counterpart. For 2011, the Cayman R performance model joins the Cayman and Cayman S to round out the available models.

The Cayman R is similar to the Boxster Spyder it takes the Cayman, sheds some weight (121 pounds to be exact) and improves performance, shooting from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds when properly equipped.

Each model of the 2011 Cayman gets its own engine. The base Cayman features a 265-horsepower, 2.9-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder, while the Cayman S gets a larger 3.4-liter version of the six-cylinder that also features direct injection and outputs 320-horsepower. The new Cayman R gets a tuned up version of the engine in the Cayman S that produces 330-horsepower. Each is available with your choice of a traditional six-speed manual or PDK dual-clutch seven-speed automatic.

The PDK is one of the most advanced transmissions on the road today utilizing a unique dual-clutch system that lets you fire off shifts with the paddles in milliseconds.

On the exterior, the Cayman features the distinctive Porsche “bubble” shape that gives it a unique profile. LED taillights in the rear are standard, as is a front lip spoiler. The Cayman S adds red-painted brake calipers to give it some visual distinction.

The Cayman R takes things even further with Porsche decals running down its sides, black highlight around the headlight clusters, new 19-inch lightweight wheels, and color-contrast side mirrors.

Inside, standard features include air conditioning, leather seating, power seats, and an engine immobilizer. The Cayman can also be outfitted with options to make sure that you are driving in comfort, such as automatic climate control, heated/ventilated seats, cruise control, and a Bose surround sound system. New features for 2011 include Bluetooth® connectivity and a USB audio connection for your iPod® or MP3 player.

Also optional is the Porche Communication Management module which features a 6.5-inch LCD screen that contains the climate, audio, and navigation system controls.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Cayman include six standard airbags, antilock disc brakes, and an electronic stability system. A bi-xenon lighting system with dynamic cornering lights that turn as you turn is optional.

The 2011 Porsche Cayman delivers performance that can only be appreciated when you get behind the wheel. So what are you waiting for?
