2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart

The Mitsubishi Lancer is an impressive car, with high-tech features to attract the most discerning individuals, while providing formidable, economical performance. Lancer has a few limits, but can fulfill your expectations.

The Lancer comes in six trims: Lancer sedan DE, ES, GTS, Ralliart, GRS, and MR. My test car was the Lancer Ralliart. All have rigid unibody construction that gives the strength to handle high-performance driving, and through its aerodynamics, it is also practical.

The power within Lancer Ralliart springs from 2.0-liter single-scroll turbocharged engine producing 237 hp and 6,000 rpm. Its strongest suit, however, is torque. A mighty 253 lb-ft is on tap as early as 2,500 rpm and keeps cranking through 4,750 rpm.

To go with the increase in power, Ralliart gets a larger front stabilizer bar and firmer springs and dampers to keep rock and roll under control. Even with all this power, EPA fuel economy estimates city mpg of 17 and highway mpg of 25. However, Mitsubishi must improve the mileage if it wants to remain competitive.

Lancer Ralliart’s drivetrain is both mighty and mannerly. Full-time AWD with active center differential features front helical and rear mechanical limited-slip differentials. The system is mated to a standard twin-clutch SST automated manual transmission, utilizing two clutches to achieve the efficiency of a manual gearbox while allowing smooth, steadfast shifting.

Lancer provides itself an all-wheel-control situation by “taking action on traction.” Lancer combines an electronic all-wheel control (AWC) system with an active stability and traction control system. AWC regulates driver torque from front to rear with a network of dynamic handling technologies. The result is an enhancement in driving performance and traction under a variety of road conditions.

Safety features

These are just a few of the safety features I would like to discuss. Since Lancer has armed itself with the most advanced active and passive safety equipment, it’s good to keep those things in mind as you pursue your next automotive purchase.

Lancer has infinite beauty combined with inner strength. The reinforced impact safety construction gives it tremendous rigidity. The sturdy underbody design includes a flat front subframe that provides a stable foundation from the front suspension and steering components.

There are seven airbags for safety, which include a dual-stage front, a front-seat side, and side-impact curtain airbags. Lancer was the first compact sedan to offer one. Lancer also features a standard driver’s side knee airbag.

In an accident it helps cushion the blow and stabilizes the driver’s legs and lower body.

There is also a front-collision-impact crumple zone. This helps those folks not lucky enough to be inside. The front end of the vehicle has been engineered to minimize injury in the event of a collision.

Inside, Lancer is a cradle of conveniences. Air conditioning with micron filter, leather-wrapped sport-type steering wheel and brake grip, sport meter gauges, and CD/MP3 audio head with six speakers, to mention a few.

Outside, Lancer features fog lights, rear spoiler, rear wiper, 18-inch alloy tires, chrome-accent front grille, and auto-off halogen headlights.

The standard price was $27,885. But my Ralliart had $3,100 of optional equipment, most of which was leather covering just about everything. But the power glass sunroof, HID headlamps, and heated front seats were also part of it.

I’ll be glad when it is time for those heated seats. It was 105 degrees in North Texas today.
