2010 Tribute Hybrid Update

Last updated on June 18th, 2011

The Mazda Tribute Hybrid – “HEV” for Hybrid Electric Vehicle as the company calls it – is another iteration of the Ford Escape Hybrid’s basic platform. The good news first. The Mazda is not quite as pricey as either the Escape or the Mariner, the Tribute serves as sort of a de-contented edition of the basic Ford design, a more accessible entry-level step into the world of hybrid sport-utility vehicles.

Now the bad news. If you are looking for a 2010 Mazda Tribute hybrid, good luck finding one.

Even the official Mazda website still refers mainly to the 2009 model (here ). We aren#8217;t certain a 2010 version can really be purchased, even in California (the only state where they have previously been sold). Do they really exist? Mazda dealers, if you have any for sale please add a comment below.

Despite its less substantial sticker, the Mazda Tribute Hybrid provides the same shockingly good fuel economy offered by its brethren – gasoline consumption is rated at 34 miles per gallon in city driving and 31 miles per gallon while cruising down the highway. The vehicle’s powertrain is of course the same 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder engine and two (front-wheel drive) or three (all-wheel drive) electric motors that work in concert to provide 177 horsepower.

The continuously-variable transmission uses a planetary gear set that places it in a different class than some of the other CVT’s used by hybrid vehicles, but the end result is acceleration and passing power that rivals a traditional gasoline-powered Tribute. The vehicle can also drive on battery power alone at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour, for short distances.

Mazda announced last year that the Tribute Hybrid would be limited to a production run of just 300 examples, all to be sold in California. Those fortunate enough to be able to pick up one of these rare SUV’s will appreciate the Tribute’s everyday practicality, thanks to comfortable rear seats and great storage space on par with the Escape and the Mariner. Both all wheel drive (4wd) and front wheel drive (2wd) are available.

Where the Tribute differs significantly is in the details – for example, the air conditioning system isn’t electric, which means that although the ventilation system can continue to run while the vehicle and engine are stopped, the compressor doesn’t provide any more cool air. A few other differences in terms of entertainment options make it clear that Mazda has decided to prioritize value over features, which is not a bad bargain to make for a more affordable hybrid.

Mazda Tribute

The official Mazda Tribute website is here  although it offers little information about the hybrid option. Maybe Mazda has quietly decided to discontinue or phase out the hybrid Tribute as they move away from using Ford#8217;s hybrid technology and strengthen their relationship with Toyota instead.

Auto News this week reported #8220; Mazda Motor Corp. today took another step toward independent product development, agreeing to lease hybrid drivetrain technology from fellow Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. instead of longtime U.S. partner Ford Motor Co.#8221;. We will wait to see what the first Mazda-Toyota hybrid looks like as the debut model is planned for a 2013 arrival.
