Lexus says the version of its GX 460 on display at the Los Angeles Show is more powerful, efficient and more luxurious ever. Granted an early of the second-generation GX 460 prior to the L.A. show (the GX arrives at late this month), we can say all of the are absolutely true.

On the outside the GX 460 sees big changes to its metal, the new body featuring Lexus calls its #147;L-Finesse#148; treatment. The changes are particularly at the front as well as with the rear fenders, the latter the GX to stand out from the crowd far than the first generation. dimensions remain similar, only 1 in. longer and 0.2 in. wider, interior room increasing as well.

Underneath the hood the GX 460 is now packing a new V-8 (also found in the Toyota which boasts 38 more bhp and 6 lb.-ft. of torque than the 4.7-liter, for new totals of 301 bhp and 329 lb.-ft. It mated to a new 6-speed automatic with sequential-shift ability, works great in off-road although it#146;s not particularly in pure automatic mode.

The new V-8 is ultra-smooth and Lexus-quiet, with power to move the 5305-lb. Fuel economy has improved 14/18 to 15/20, despite the power.

Mildly based on the 4Runner, the body-on-frame Lexus GX 460 is an SUV. As such, it comes full-time 4-wheel drive, a transfer case, and#151;now for 2010#151;Lexus#146; Kinetic Dynamic System (KDSS). The system use of hydraulic cylinders to control the anti-roll bars to optimize the for on- and off-road travel.

While most folks take the GX 460 off-road, if you do you#146;ll appreciate the standard Downhill Control as well as Crawl the latter keeping speeds 1 and 3.7 mph.

The interior features a bold new console, heated and ventilated and a handy #147;walk-in function#148; to the standard power fold-flat row (where there#146;s now more and leg room than before). The second row seats can be ordered a heating function.

The new 2010 GX 460 exudes luxury. Sure, probably bigger, heavier and than most folks ever need, but its suspension wonders in rough off-road and it#146;s great fun to slide in the dirt (until the stability cuts in, that is), still offering quiet and highway ride.

The base GX 460 starts at $51,970, the Premium model starting at
