2010 Jeep Compass

The 2010 Jeep Compass can’t go off-road, and testers say it’s disappointing on-road, too. Despite its cheap price, experts advise buyers to look elsewhere.

If you’re on a tight budget, even the nondescript Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are much better choices, Edmunds.com says (referring to the older, 2009 version of the Hyundai) — not to mention a host of other small SUVs that critics like quite well, including the top-rated 2010 Honda CR-V (Base MSRP: $21,545 to $27,745) .

The Compass shares platforms with the 2010 Jeep Patriot (Base MSRP: $15,365 to $24,550). but while the Patriot is designed for both on-road and off-road driving (although experts say it doesn’t really excel at either), the Compass is the first Jeep that isn’t meant to go off-road at all.

Fuel economy is the Compass’s main asset in reviews. It ties with the 2010 Hyundai Tucson (Base MSRP: $18,995 to $25,845) for best estimated city mpg of any nonhybrid SUV: 23 mpg city/29 mpg highway/25 mpg combined with the base engine, a 158-horsepower, 2-liter four-cylinder, and five-speed manual transmission. An optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) drops 2 mpg on the highway.

The 2 liter is offered with front-wheel drive only.

There’s little fuel economy penalty for the step-up 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine — but testers say there’s little power boost, either, and both engines are considered sluggish. Expect 23 mpg city/28 mpg highway/25 mpg combined with the bigger engine and manual transmission, dropping to 21 mpg city/25 mpg highway/23 mpg with the CVT (losing 1 mpg highway and combined with four-wheel drive). Although the Environmental Protection Agency singles out the Jeep Compass for praise based on its city mpg, the better-rated Hyundai Tucson, 2010 Chevrolet Equinox (Base MSRP: $22,615 to $29,970) and 2010 GMC Terrain (Base MSRP: $24,250 to $31,300) actually deliver better highway and overall estimated fuel economy.

Inside, the Compass offers some interesting gadgets; reviews particularly like the built-in rechargeable flashlight and optional tailgate speakers. The Jeep Compass Sport (Base MSRP: $15,365 to $20,470) comes with air conditioning, a CD stereo with audio jack, tilt steering, roof rails and fog lamps, with the option to buy more features such as power accessories and cruise control. The Limited trim (Base MSRP: $23,385 to $25,135) adds heated leather seats, satellite radio and a six-CD changer.

However, while ConsumerGuide.com says materials in the five-passenger cabin are in step with class competitors, other critics use words like crude and cheap to describe the swaths of hard, sharp-edged plastic. Several say thick roof pillars and headrests block the rear view. Cargo space lands at the bottom of the class, at 53.6 cubic feet maximum, but the rear and front passenger seats do fold flat to accommodate long items.

Towing capacity is 2,000 pounds max — about average for a small SUV.

Crash scores are also about average for the class. The Compass earns the highest 5-star frontal crash rating in federal tests, with 4 stars for side-crash protection and rollover resistance. The Compass has not been tested by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which adds rear-crash and rollover roof-strength tests.

Unlike most small SUVs, the Compass makes side airbags an extra-cost option; however, front and curtain airbags, antilock brakes, traction and stability control come standard.

Reliability has been average, reviews say. The 2010 Jeep Compass carries a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and five-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

Edmunds.com and ConsumerReports.org both thoroughly test the Jeep Compass and compare it with other SUVs. ConsumerGuide.com also tests most aspects of the Compass, comparing it with a class average. J.D. Power and Associates’ reliability rankings are helpful, as are pollution and fuel-economy ratings at FuelEconomy.gov and GreenerCars.org.

SaferCar.gov posts government crash ratings for the Compass.
