Used Car: 2010 Hummer H3 Review

The 2010 Hummer H3 boasts great off-road capability in a distinctive, rugged package. It can be hard to maneuver because it’s so large, plus it delivers mediocre highway performance. Add to that dismal safety scores, low fuel economy estimates and below-average reliability, and it’s easy to see why the Hummer ranks so low in its class.

The 2010 Hummer H3 is ranked:

If you’re looking for a 2010 midsize SUV that screams “Look at me!” on the road or in the parking lot, the Hummer H3 is a great choice, as long as you don’t care about its bad fuel economy and surprisingly low safety ratings. Like the 2010 Jeep Wrangler and 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser. the Hummer H3 stays true to its roots as an all-purpose off-roader, though many choose to use it as a family SUV.

Test drivers loved the Hummer’s distinctive looks, available V8 engine and off-road performance. However, since most buyers won’t take advantage of the H3’s off-road brawn, reviewers recommended SUVs that have far better on-road manners and fuel economy and those that offer a third row of seats.

The Hummer H3 comes standard with four-wheel drive and is available in four trims. Base and Adventure trims come with an inline five-cylinder engine and a manual transmission, while higher trims have an automatic transmission and an available V8 engine. Standard features include Bluetooth, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and a six-speaker stereo, though depending on the model, you may find more luxurious features like leather upholstery, heated front seats and navigation.

Other Cars to Consider

If you like the Hummer H3’s off-road capabilities, but you want better fuel economy and don’t need such a luxurious interior, consider the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser. It doesn’t come standard with four-wheel drive like the Hummer, but the base model gets significantly better gas mileage and offers more power. It’s also hard to beat the FJ Cruiser for its good safety scores, off-road performance and strong reliability, so if you don’t prioritize luxury, the Toyota is a great choice.

To match the Hummer’s off-road abilities and get an equally upscale interior, consider the upper trims of the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee is an excellent off-road SUV, and more expensive models can include features like leather seats, available Sirius TV, a 30-GB hard drive for music files and remote start.

Although the Jeep doesn’t have the same stand-out looks as the Hummer, it’s more comfortable to drive on the road and gets slightly better gas mileage.
