Used Car: 2010 BMW 5-Series Review

According to most reviewers, the 2010 BMW 5-Series is a driver’s dream car. It isn’t the most reliable or efficient car in the class, but if you’re looking for a sports sedan that’s exciting to drive, the 5-Series is the class leader.

The 2010 BMW 5-Series is ranked:

Test drivers raved about the 5-Series’ handling capabilities, especially on winding roads, and noted the 5-Series performed equally well on beaten-up streets. Throw in the available all-wheel drive and the 5-Series is nearly unmatched when it comes to handling. The 5-Series has powerful six-cylinder and V8 engine options.

Reviewers liked the turbocharged six-cylinder engine in the mid-level 535i, saying that it is quick and fuel-efficient.

The base 528i gets up to 18/28 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. When it was new, test drivers thought that the base 528i was a bit underpowered for true driving enthusiasts, but would satisfy most others. On the downside, the 5-Series has lower-than-average safety scores and its reliability rating, while decent, is below many rivals’.

When it was new, auto critics were split on the 5-Series’ interior. Some thought it was luxurious and comfortable, but others felt that it couldn’t compete with rivals. Test drivers found that the front seats in the 5-Series were some of the most comfortable on the market. In addition, there is plenty of leg- and headroom inside the 5-Series for back-seat passengers.

Most reviewers disliked BMW’s iDrive user interface because they believed it was too complicated to operate.

A sunroof, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power front seats and a 10-speaker stereo are among the 528i’s standard features. Front and rear parking sensors, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, push-button start, navigation and an upgraded stereo were available either in packages or as standalone options when the 5-Series was new. The 5-Series received a complete redesign for 2011, so you might want to consider the 2011 model for updated features.

Other Cars to Consider

Not many large luxury cars can match the interior refinement of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. which is one reason it should be on your list. The E-Class also offers good performance, high safety scores and an excellent reliability rating. However, the 5-Series gets better fuel economy without sacrificing performance.

The 2010 Lexus GS is a practical luxury sedan that offers steady performance and excellent reliability. While both cars have comparable fuel economy and safety ratings, the GS outshines the 5-Series in terms of reliability.
