The 2009 Volvo C70 is a luxury convertible that eschews style, while still focusing on safety. There are nods to performance and handling as well as overall driving enjoyment. Volvo didn’t dive head first into the luxury convertible market with the hopes of upstaging performance stalwarts like Audi and BMW.

The 2009 Volvo C70 is more of a driving machine than this maker typically produces.

For 2009, the Volvo C70 has a number of small upgrades, including aluminum interior trim, improved navigation operation, and one-button top operation with automatic window lowering. Bluetooth connectivity is now standard.


The 2009 Volvo C70 is offered in just one trim level, the T5, which includes 17-inch alloy wheels and a power-retractable hardtop. This four-seat luxury convertible offers buyers a number of packages plus additional stand-alone upgrades. Rear park assist, heated outside mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, headlamp washers, plus keyless ignition and entry are the exterior features included in the option packages.

Volvo’s blind-spot monitor, xenon headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels round out the stand alone exterior options.

It is worth mentioning that the C70’s exterior is far more stylized than one would expect from a Volvo. So much so that many who see it for the first time need to do a double take and make sure of the Volvo badge on this sporty and sleek convertible.


On the inside, the 2009 Volvo C70 has eight-way power front seats with driver memory, full power accessories, automatic dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth, and an eight-speaker audio system with a CD/MP3 player and auxiliary audio jack. The Premium package upgrades to leather seats and a six-CD changer. The Climate package adds heated front seats while the Convenience package features a cabin air filtration system. The Dynaudio package has a 14-speaker surround-sound audio system.

Stand-alone options for the cabin include a hard-drive-based navigation system with real-time traffic, satellite radio, and interior wood inlays.

Some of the materials feel cheap and out of place in a car of this class, but the interior is comfortable and nice, though not necessarily elegant. The back seat lacks legroom for adults. The hardtop is easy to operate, making wind-in-your hair driving easy to attain.

Performance Handling

The 2009 C70 receives power from a turbocharged, 2.5-liter, inline five-cylinder engine that produces 227 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The front-wheel drive hooks into a six-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic with manual shift control. This setup provides enough performance-based thrills for the average car owner, but drivers looking for the real deal will want to look at the competition.

The look and style of the 2009 Volvo C70 are that of a performance machine, yet Volvo is not as practiced at making cars tilted towards driving excitement and it shows. That is not to say that the C70 is completely average; quite the contrary, it is a fun car to drive. The luxury convertible market is long on serious performance cars and the 2009 Volvo C70 ends up feeling more like a comfortable daily commuter than a real European sport machine.

A 16.4-gallon fuel tank allows the 2009 Volvo C70 to travel 295 city miles and 426 highway miles after a fill-up. Models with a manual transmission may see a slight increase in range.


Even though Volvo broke ranks with the 2009 Volvo C70 and decided to make a fun car with interesting styling, the Swedish maker did not forgo its trademark high standard for safety. The 2009 Volvo C70 gets top marks in crash tests. The impressive list of safety equipment begins with standard gear like stability control, anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, front-seat side airbags, and door-mounted side curtain airbags that offer protection even when the top is down.

Even automatically deployed rollover bars mounted behind the seats and anti-whiplash seats are also included as standard equipment. Volvo’s blind-spot monitor (BLIS) is another available option.
