2009 Subaru Impreza WRX

The revised and vastly improved WRX is than an STI. Seriously.

There are few problems more horsepower can#x2019;t fix or at help you ignore. And as a perfect study, we bring you the 2009 Impreza WRX. Our first impression of the WRX left us hot and cold. Interior overall refinement, and noise were vastly improved, but the WRX the thrill of the previous car.

The engine was largely unchanged, and gain was nonexistent, but the WRX came off as of an Impreza GT than the street of a rally car, a trait its had in spades. And with the Mazdaspeed 3, Cobalt SS, and Dodge Caliber all making more than 260 the WRX looked anemic by comparison only 224 ponies on tap.

So has addressed these issues a few updates, the most notable a power boost to 265 horsepower, an of 41. These changes only to the manual-transmission WRX; the automatic unchanged in all but name and is now appropriately as the Impreza 2.5GT. Subaru#x2019;s plan is to align the 2.5GT the naturally aspirated 2.5i and liken the WRX to the 305-hp STI.

To that effect, the WRX now shares a with the STI, and the optional kit becomes standard. The five-door WRX gets the rear spoiler the STI.

Better Driving Through Chemistry

The power comes from a larger turbocharger, maximum boost up to 13.3 psi 11.9. A new catalytic converter and a exhaust#x2014;it provides 30-percent-better reduce back pressure the increased boost. The power is 800 rpm higher at 6000 rpm.

is up to 244 pound-feet, an increase of 18 that at a relatively lofty 4000 but there#x2019;s plenty of grunt at 2500 rpm.

And when we say plenty, we mean it: the WRX now blasts to 60 mph from a standstill in an 4.7 seconds. That’s 1.1 seconds than the 2008 model#x2014;and get second quicker than managed in a WRX STI, the supposedly version of the WRX. The fact the WRX is now substantially quicker seems bonkers, but there are a couple of explanations.

First, the WRX STI weighs a 180 pounds more than the WRX, according to our scales. the STI and its closer-ratio six-speed manual for two shifts to 60, while the regular five speed hits 60 mph in gear. By the time the pair a quarter-mile, the ’09 WRX loses ground, though; both the line at 102 mph, with the Rex edging out the STI by just 0.1 second, to 13.6.

It#x2019;s unlikely that the upgrades to the 2009 WRX would as much attention, if any, had the been left untouched. the WRX is now stiffer and sportier. The front strut mounts are borrowed the STI, and the front and rear rates have increased 43 and 42 percent, respectively.

The front and rear anti-roll have grown a millimeter in to 21mm front and 16mm Tire size has increased 205/50R-17 to 225/50R-17, and the rubber changes from all-season to high-performance Dunlop SP Sport The valves on the steering have updated to complement the new tires.
