Used Car: 2009 Saturn VUE Review

The 2009 Saturn VUE has a comfortable ride and an upscale, high-quality interior and is a good choice for anyone in the market for a 2009 compact SUV.

The 2009 Saturn VUE is ranked:

When it was new, critics praised the 2009 Saturn VUE for offering a contemporary interior with good fit and finish. The Saturn brand has been shuttered, but if that doesn’t bother you, the VUE should prove to be a good choice. Those looking for athletic handling should look for the sport-tuned Red Line model.

A hybrid model is also available and is reviewed separately.

The VUE is available with either a four-cylinder or one of two six-cylinder engines. The four-cylinder makes 172 horsepower, the 3.5-liter V6 makes 222 horsepower and top XR and Red Line trims get a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 257 horsepower. Most critics said the four-cylinder and base V6 engine felt sluggish compared with the 3.6-liter V6, but have enough power for daily driving.

Reviewers also noted that all models handle fairly well. Either front- or all-wheel drive is available, and your only transmission option is an automatic. Four-cylinder models with front-wheel drive get 19/26 mpg city/highway, which is okay for the class, but not great. Opting for all-wheel drive or one of the V6 engines lessens mileage somewhat.

The VUE has a strong safety score, while its reliability score is about average for the class.

Inside, the VUE received lots of praise for its cabin that critics said looks upscale and classy. Most said there was ample space in the front and rear, but the seats themselves drew mixed reviews in terms of comfort. Standard equipment includes cloth seats and a CD stereo.

Features found in option packages or upper trims include automatic climate control, navigation, heated seats, Bluetooth and a rear-seat entertainment system. Red Line models get unique, leather-trimmed sport seats. Maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded is 56.4 cubic feet, which is low for the class.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking at the VUE, be sure to check out the highly-ranked 2009 Chevrolet Equinox. The Equinox is also available with two V6 engines that make adequate power and contribute to the Equinox’s smooth, refined ride. Critics also liked the Equinox’s spacious interior and versatile sliding rear seats.

Another 2009 compact SUV to consider is the 2009 Mazda CX-7. The CX-7 was regarded by critics as one of the sportiest entries in the segment, so it’s a good choice for those looking for a fun-driving SUV.

Keep in mind that the CX-7 has less passenger and cargo space than many other SUVs in the class.
