Used Car: 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer Review

The 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer might offer powerful engines and a roomy cabin, but it ranks poorly due to its low safety scores, terrible fuel economy and cheap interior materials.

The 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer is ranked:

When it was new, reviewers said the 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer had a roomy interior and plenty of power, especially in sportier SS models. However, along with its corporate siblings, the 2009 GMC Envoy and 2009 Saab 9-7X. the TrailBlazer has a list of shortcomings that may be too long to be ignored. Fuel economy ranges from terrible in base six-cylinder models to horrendous in 6.0-liter V8 models.

Most test drivers complained about shoddy interior materials and build quality. The TrailBlazer’s reliability rating is about average, though a number of SUVs earn better ratings. Additionally, the TrailBlazer’s safety scores are poor.

Whether you’re looking for a truck-based SUV for towing and hauling, or a family vehicle to tote around your kids and their stuff, any of the Chevrolet TrailBlazers’ rivals will prove to be a better alternative.

The base Chevrolet TrailBlazer offers seating for five, a luggage rack, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and dual-zone manual climate control.

LT, LT2 and LT3 models all come standard with a 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine, but the SS model comes with a hefty 6.0-liter V8. Six-cylinder models are available with either rear- or four-wheel drive, while the TrailBlazer SS comes with rear- or all-wheel drive. Higher-end trims offer features like Bluetooth, leather-trimmed upholstery and heated power-folding sideview mirrors.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re considering the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, check out the 2009 Toyota 4Runner. It’s more capable off-road than the TrailBlazer, and in contrast with the TrailBlazer’s poor interior quality, test drivers said the 4Runner’s interior is well-made. This Toyota also gets better fuel economy and has an outstanding reliability rating.

All-around, the Toyota 4Runner is a much better SUV for off-roading, towing, hauling or family duty.

The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is adept at combining a family-friendly interior with hardcore off-roading ability. It has a similar reliability rating, but the Grand Cherokee’s good safety scores should appeal to shoppers looking for a capable, safe used SUV. Plus, test drivers loved the Grand Cherokee’s comfortable ride, well-designed interior, attractive looks and go-anywhere attitude.
