The good: The Scion xB is a tech-laden bargain with a nice standard interface among its many electronics, plenty of space and an easy-to-drive nature.

The bad: cell phone integration is absent, and overall the new xB is bigger and stylish than its urban-chic

The bottom line: The new Scion xB has its bold exterior creases and of its character, but has also grown up a bit and now one of the best tech values seen in a new car.

2008 Scion xB

Our last of the Scion xB came more two years ago, when we a 2005 model and came favorably impressed with the despite a lack of available options for the interior. One of the two models the xA) that led Scion’s 2004 into the U.S. market, the xB was sized for the city but with a large interior and a cheekiness helped it outsell the other handily.

For 2008, predictably if the xB has gotten bigger, thirstier, and in its second iteration. The lovable styling that made it at its original launch has given way to edges and a less blatant shape. Whether these to convention attract a wider of buyers or alienate the model’s remains to be seen, but some of the attitude has been sacrificed, and we it.

However, the news is far from If the Scion has grown up a bit on the outside, a maturation has bestowed the interior an extensive list of tech and more usable cargo than the airy cabin of the xB. Bluetooth for hands-free calling is the major absence on the available list, but otherwise our complaints the earlier xB’s thin offerings have been with a vengeance.

Test the Epic Japanese-Italian three-way

How cars offer occupants the to watch three separate simultaneously? We’re hard-pressed to of any, let alone with a sticker price like the we tested. With this in mind, we tested the tech in the xB with a simultaneous in-car trilogy viewing. After considering the obvious father-son of the original Star Wars we decided that the scion was best portrayed in the Godfather

Plus we’ve seen Wars too many times.

Two rear DVD units means we can three movies at once in the xB.

The iPod menu structure is for one-touch access to playlists, and genres. All track information is during playback, just as on an screen (which is frozen connected to the car). This of the touch screen makes it one of the successful iPod interfaces seen, the only real being scrolling through alphabetical lists, which is using arrow buttons to only six items at a time.

iPod menu-surfing controls are while the xB is moving, which a little excessive as they’re no distracting than the other controls. We also played from our Sony Ericsson via the aux input, but it wasn’t nearly as since all control was through the with the entire main simply displaying AUX in audio

The xB’s standard 160-watt setup includes two tweeters and nicely with the touch which offers controls for the sound. An equalizer and various processing options are also through the nav screen. One option our didn’t include was the upgraded premium audio system, has an extra sound processing for owners who add aftermarket amplifiers.

The single-CD slot is behind the nav screen, and the system played MP3 and WMA discs without fuss, complete ID3 tagging information.

guidance works well the xB’s navigation system.

The system’s execution is also and leaves little to be desired at price, save perhaps activation as seen on some Hondas. Every other possibility is present, however, via a configurable onscreen keyboard, by number (from the points of database), or by freeway exit. Map and route calculation weren’t as as with some of the current systems we’ve tested, but it felt slow.

In terms of the redesigned xB’s interior have the TARDIS-like feel of the car’s, in which the seats sat low and was vast. But the new car’s larger including an extra four in the wheelbase and an entire foot of length, make for more space and rear-seat shoulder Interior storage spaces are with a shelf above the box and the center armrest cubby sized to fit CD jewel boxes.

great touch is a shelf the rear seat cushion, can hold the headphones or other items. A covered organizer the spare wheel allows electronics and other flat to be out of sight when the car is parked.

The rear seats split and 60/40 for some variation in configurations. During our week the car, we used it to pick up a Samsung HPT5064 plasma TV, it swallowed in the box with the rear closing easily.

On the interior front, driver and passenger are standard along with and side-curtain airbags. A tire monitoring system is also The gauge cluster is much over the original xB’s tach-in-speedo arrangement. Four round dials (digital analog tach, fuel and engine temperature) now sit in the center of the angled slightly toward the

To their left is a digital that shows the current alongside a clock, average or MPG, or miles to empty.

the hood

Along with its size and heft, the 2008 xB gets almost a full more engine displacement the original car’s anemic four. Horsepower is up from 108 to but more significant is the torque from 105 to 162 pound-feet. The 2.4-liter in the new xB retains the four valve per DOHC layout of the smaller as well as Toyota’s VVT-i timing system.

Although it uses a stronger than the previous model, 2.4-liter has more bulk to around.

Our xB for this test was with the four-speed automatic, has a sequential manual-shift mode. proved handy for holding on hills, as despite the new xB’s power numbers, it still a fair amount of revving to momentum up some of San Francisco’s slopes. In regular driving, the xB accelerates well enough and the wheelbase makes for a smoother than in the first xB.

The front-drive behavior is as expected, with steering feel and smoother out of city corners than front-drivers.

Standard chassis features include traction and Vehicle Stability Control. are discs all around (an upgrade the first xB’s rear with ABS, electronic force distribution, and emergency assist.

EPA fuel economy (the more stringent numbers) for the Scion xB are 22mpg in the and 28mpg on the highway. Our week the xB was spent almost entirely on streets, during which we may been slightly more than the average driver on our way to a average, according to the car’s computer.

In sum

Very few pundits predicted the success of the original xB, which Toyota’s decision to soften its character and move it slightly seem sort of risky. But aside, the new xB is an improved car in most and when carefully optioned can be as much a (relative) bargain as the version.

The base MSRP of our car was $16,600. It had a fair amount of cosmetic options (carpet rear bumper applique, cup holder and door sills) we would leave off of a car we ordered which would save $800.

We would keep the system, alloy wheels DVD players, and security system All told, the car we tested retailed for including a $580 destination

At this price, and with so well-executed tech features the 2008 Scion xB is a great Only its lack of Bluetooth us from giving it higher an 8 in our Comfort subrating.
