Though predominantly a manufacturer of small cars, Suzuki decided to enter a bigger SUV category than they were traditional known for and hence launched the Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 in 2001.

The first-generation XL-7 was a vehicle that was essentially a stretched Grand Vitara with the company#8217;s 2.7-litre V6 engine on a rear wheel drive-based platform with optional four-wheel-drive.

Building on the great success of the Grand Vitara 5-door, Suzuki#8217;s mid-size SUV, the XL-7 has a 320mm (12.6-inch) longer wheelbase and is 505mm (19.1-inches) longer overall, making it the largest vehicle Suzuki has produced. Blending impressive flexibility and good interior space within a dynamically styled and manageably sized package, the XL-7 has admirable off-road abilities as well as the load carrying advantages of a large estate car.

Under the bonnet, power comes from an all-aluminium 2.7-litre DOHC 24-valve V6 engine coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox or optional 5-speed, electronically controlled, automatic transmission, producing its peak output of 184 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 3,300 rpm. To help maximise the engine#8217;s output the differential gearing has been lowered. The result is improved acceleration while still maintaining good fuel economy.

Inside, the driver side features a large and contoured panel that contains the speedometer, tachometer, fuel and engine temperature gauges, an array of warning lamps including low fuel and door open reminders and, on automatic models, a gear position indicator. An #8216;easy grip#8217; steering wheel is tilt adjustable and incorporates fingertip switches for lights, indicators, front and rear windscreen washers, wipers and the mode and volume of the radio and CD player. The latter is integrated at the top of the front centre console and has large, simple to use controls, all within easy reach of both the driver and front seat passenger.

Suzuki debuted an all-new funky XL-7 at the 2006 New York Auto Show which shifts to the larger front wheel drive-based Theta platform. It becomes Suzuki#8217;s first crossover SUV and has been made available in the United States. It features a Suzuki-built version of the GM High Feature engine, a DOHC 3.6-litre V6 which produces 252 bhp and 329 Nm as well as a five-speed automatic transmission.

For sure, it is going take a while before this snazzy new SUV hits this part of the world!
