The 2007 Opel Antara mid-size crossover SUV will be officially presented to the public during the next Motor Show in Paris this autumn.

Despite constantly growing oil prices, executives from the German Adam Opel AG expect that European crossover and SUV market will be able to swallow yet another member of the already enormous family of off-roaders that will never see the real dirt.

Opel says that the new Antara crossover SUV will feature a unibody construction, intellectual four-wheel drive, and high ground clearance combined with compact (4.57 meters in length, 1.85 meters in width and 1.70 meters in height) dimensions.

Developed together with the Korean brand Daewoo, which is, too, a subsidiary of the American giant General Motors, the car is based on the Theta platform, which is shared by a great number of other GM#8217;s crossovers, including Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox, Saturn Vue, Suzuki XL7 and Saab 9-4X.

Initially, the 2007 Opel Antara will be unleashed with a set of three engines and two transmissions.

The most expensive model will come with a 3.2-liter V6 petrol engine, which features 224 horsepower, but churns out not particularly impressive torque of only 297 Nm (219 lb-ft.)

The engine is mated with an automatic six-speed manual gearbox with ActiveSelect function that, in two words, allows you to manually switch the box to lower or higher gears. Some people find the feature useful, however, to be frank, I have never actually used it on my own diesel-powered crossover SUV.

The next in line will be a 150 hp / 320 Nm (240 lb-ft) 2.0-liter VDCi turbo-diesel engine with common-rail system, which can be ordered width either a manual or an automatic five-speed transmission.

The cheapest trim will be equipped with 2.4-liter 141 hp / 230 Nm (170 lb-ft) Ecotec four-cylinder gasoline unit with two overhead camshafts and one balance shaft.

On the U.S. market, the car will be sold as Chevrolet Captiva and Saturn Vue.
