What’s New

The Mitsubishi Endeavor sport utility vehicle (SUV) received a major revamping in 2006 and only receives a handful of changes for 2007. There’s a new Special Edition (SE) model that adds heated leather seats with driver’s side power controls and a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system with satellite radio. The XLS and Limited trim levels have been dropped, which still leaves four models in the lineup: SE, SE with Sunroof Package, SE with Sunroof Package and navigation system, and the LS.

According to Mitsubishi, these trim levels are more in line with what customers are looking for in this crossover mid-size sport utility.

The Mitsubishi Endeavor isn’t new to the segment, but is a viable choice for those looking for a mix of practicality and a smooth ride. And although the crossover moniker wasn’t part of the Endeavor when it first appeared on the market in 2004, the SUV’s size and features certainly put it in this new-and often misunderstood-category.

The LS gets new color-keyed bumpers for 2007, while the SE design elements include chrome grille trim, color-keyed door handles, sideview mirrors, and rear license plate garnish. Inside, the LS’ cloth seats have been upgraded to better fabric, and both the LS and SE offer redesigned door panels.

Mitsubishi Endeavor

Built in the U.S. the Endeavor offers a long list of safety and convenience features. Inside, the large interior can seat 5 passengers comfortably and offers them standard air conditioning, cruise control, redundant steering wheel-mounted controls, four 12-volt power outlets, a keyless entry system, power windows/door locks/mirrors, and an AM/FM/CD audio system with 6 speakers and MP3 playback capability.

Cargo hauling is a strong point for this SUV, as it will handily carry over 76 cubic feet of gear with the 60/40 split second-row seats folded. That means it easily holds a full-size washer and dryer-with the lift gate closed-or, if you wish, a 4×8 sheet of plywood. The lift gate also has a separate control to open just the glass for easy loading.

Power for the Endeavor comes from a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that makes 255 hp and the same amount of torque. It’s available in two- or all-wheel drive (AWD), and can tow a maximum of 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. Standard safety features include rollover-sensing side curtain air bags, a tire-pressure-monitoring system, and anti-lock brakes.

The AWD model gets Mitsubishi’s Active Skid and Traction Control system to help transfer torque to the wheels that have grip for improved traction and control.

The Competition

The Mitsubishi Endeavor competes in the Midsize Utility segment, which consists of 16 models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, reliability, and comfort, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider Study SM and the Escaped Shopper Study. SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report, SM were the Honda Pilot (152,154 units sold), Jeep Grand Cherokee (139,148), and Ford Explorer (131,759). The Mitsubishi Endeavor sold 14,017 units in 2006, a decrease of 33.2 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Midsize Utility segment include the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Toyota 4Runner. Jeep Commander.

Nissan Pathfinder. and Dodge Durango. Joining the segment in 2007 is the Chrysler Aspen .
