Overview

What’s New

The 3.9-liter V-6 engine offered as an option on 2006 models is standard on all 2007 Uplander models. Also, a FlexFuel version of the engine that can operate on gasoline and agriculturally-derived E85 ethanol fuel is available on all but the regular-wheelbase LS model. All-wheel drive is no longer offered, but GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability system is now standard on most Uplander models.

Overview

The Chevrolet Uplander minivan was introduced in 2005 along with its GM siblings, the Buick Terraza. Saturn Relay. and Pontiac Montana SV6 (since discontinued). Only Chevrolet, however, offers two wheelbase lengths. Ironically, it is the availability of the shorter version that makes the Uplander unique; the 8-inch longer extended-wheelbase model is offered by all.

GM, Chevrolet included, touts these midsize vans as #34;crossover sport vans#34; because they combine elements of a sport utility vehicle, sedan, and minivan. The strongest characteristics are from the minivan segment, however, with features like sliding side doors, lower ground clearance for easy access, and removable seats.

All Uplander models-even the regular-wheelbase LS-can seat up to 7 passengers in three rows. The Uplander is available in regular- and extended-length LS models (the extended-length offers 16 more cubic feet of cargo space), as well as extended-length-only 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT models.

A commercial-grade cargo van in both regular- and extended-length is also available. The cargo van comes with both light-duty and heavy-duty suspensions-the former being new for 2007.

GM’s Vortec 3500 3.5-liter V-6 engine that came standard on most Uplander models in 2006 has been dropped for 2007. In its place is a 3.9-liter V-6 with variable valve timing. It is the only engine available, although a FlexFuel version can be had, too.

The new 3.9-liter produces 240 hp and 240 lb.-ft. of torque, which is a sizable increase over the former engine’s 201 hp and 216 lb.-ft. of torque. All models come with an electronically-controlled 4-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain is backed by GM’s new 5-year/100,000-mile limited warranty.

The Competition

The Chevrolet Uplander competes in the Midsize Van segment, which consists of 13 models. Buyers in this segment look for reliability, safety, and comfort, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider Study SM and the Escaped Shopper Study. SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report, SM were the Dodge Caravan / Grand Caravan (211,140 units sold), Honda Odyssey (177,919), and Toyota Sienna (163,269). The Chevrolet Uplander sold 58,699 units in 2006, a decrease of 19.6 percent compared to the previous year.

Other models offered in the Midsize Van segment include the Chrysler Town Country. Kia Sedona. Ford Freestar. Nissan Quest. and Mazda5 .
