Dynamism, sportiness and sophistication are the key words to define the new Audi S3, the top of the range model for the A3 series. Featuring a 265 bhp boosted version of the already known 122 cui TFSI engine (that offers only 200 bhp on the Audi A3 2.0 TFSI and Volkswagen Golf GTI) and Quattro permanent four-wheel drive the newcomer hot hatch pursues the ideal of pure driving pleasure coupled simultaneously with excellent everyday practicality – like all Audi S models.

The new Audi S3 is set to redefine the standards of the premium compact class at the level of a sports car. It sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and halts acceleration only when reaching 155 mph. Aggressively hard-hitting, free-revving and with a sonorous acoustic profile, the powerful 122 cui, turbocharged four-cylinder unit with TFSI petrol direct injection proves to be a smooth, high-performance engine.

As the other A3 models it shares the same technical platform with the Volkswagen Golf V. The engine is also shared with the Audi A3 2.0 TFSI and the Golf GTI . To insure a performance upgrade the supercharging pressure of the S3’s unit was increased so it delivers 65 more bhp over the A3 and Golf GTI. A difference to the Volkswagen Golf GTI models is the Quattro 4WD system used exclusively on Audi models

History

Audi S3

The first generation Audi S3 (1999-2003) was built on the same A platform of the Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf IV, Audi TT. SEAT León and Škoda Octavia. It equipped a R4 20V 110 cui turbocharged petrol engine offering 225 bhp. Early models (1999-2002) had a detuned 210 bhp engine, in order to avoid internal competition with the 225 bhp Audi TT.

2002-2003 models had variable valve timing and 225 bhp. That generation of S3 was the first Audi S-series car to use a small four-cylinder engine.

Although dubbed as Quattro . the first S3 used the cheaper VW 4-Motion four-wheel drive system. That used a Haldex coupling to adjust the bias from the front to rear axle as grip changed, but most of the time it operated as a front-wheel drive.

With its compact dimensions and a the wide range of seat and steering wheel adjustments, the early S3 one of the most enjoyed hot hatches. It was sold was sold in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia, but was not officially marketed in the United States.

The first Audi S3 received a face-lift in 2001, where it was given one-piece headlights/indicator units, different front wings, rear lights clusters and some minor upgrades to interior trim (e.g. a digital clock and audio packages).
