What’s New

Jaguar’s X-Type sees several minor changes for 2006, including a new front grille and new wheel design. Bluetooth wireless connectivity and Sirius Satellite Radio are now options. Indigo and Winter Gold join the color palette, and the wheel caps and steering wheel get a new black Growler badge.

Deleted this year is the base 2.5L V-6 engine and manual gearbox option.

Jaguar X-Type

Jaguar’s entry-level car, the X-Type, comes in three sedan variations (base, sporty R, and luxury VDP), and one sport wagon bodystyle. All are powered by a 3.0L V-6 producing 227 hp, with a 5-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution, three-point safety belts throughout, and pre-tensioning front safety belts with load limiters.

Additionally, there are dual-stage front air bags, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags, and side-impact head protection curtain air bags for the front and rear outboard occupants. Protecting the lower legs of the driver, the X-Type features an inflatable knee bolster air bag located within the driver-side footwell. ABS-assisted disc brakes are also standard, with dynamic stability control available as an option.

Standard features on the base X-Type 3.0 and X-Type Sportwagon include complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first year or 12,000 miles, a vehicle security system, remote keyless access, heated windshield washers, power-adjustable and heated outside mirrors, wood interior trim, leather seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel, power driver and passenger seat, cruise control, a multi-function steering wheel with audio, phone and cruise controls, automatic climate control, and a 120-watt CD stereo system.

The X-Type Sport also gets a sport-tuned suspension, Xenon headlamps, a full body kit (lower front valance, side sills, rear bumper valance, and a trunk lid spoiler), body-colored grille surround, blacked-out window trim, dual sport tail pipes, and carbon fiber interior trim. Luxury items on the VDP edition include rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, a self-dimming rear-view mirror, burl walnut interior trim, a wood- and leather-trimmed steering wheel, contrasting leather piping on the seats and headrests, memory driver’s seat and external mirrors, and a 320-watt Alpine audio system. Notable options include a DVD-based navigation system, Bluetooth wireless technology, Sirius Satellite Radio, heated front seats, metallic paint, reverse park control, 18-inch wheels, a moonroof, and dynamic stability control.

The Competition

The Compact Premium Conventional segment is where consumers claim their first set of luxury wheels, and combining luxury features with the sort of dynamic capabilities found in more compact cars scores big with those who may be entering the luxury car class for the first time.

According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report, SM the BMW 3 Series led this category in calendar year 2005 with 106,950 sales. Next came the Acura TL (78,218 units in 2005) and Infiniti G35 (68,728).

The Jaguar X-Type garnered 10,941 sales in 2005. Other entries included the Cadillac CTS, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, Acura TSX, Volvo S40/V50 and S60, and Saab 9-3.
