Sometimes a little self-control can make all the difference.

If you’re anything like the average gearhead, you’re most likely lacking one of the most basic of human attributes: patience. Some refer to it as an acquired skill, spouting off virtuous phrases tied to old adages and life lessons, while others shrug it off as nothing more than a waste of precious time. For those of us who fall into the “lacking” category, things are only getting worse.

Limitless access to aftermarket parts via the web, combined with America’s ever growing “buy now, pay later” attitude can wreak havoc on a person’s financial standing. The very thought of instant satisfaction is tough to resist, even if your credit score insists that you avoid temptation. On the flip side, there are those few who are blessed with the ability to resist, all the while knowing that the best is yet to come.

Take Brian Berger of Virginia for example. Rather than nickel-and-dime his way through a subpar project car on a starving student’s budget, he decided to focus his attention on school, with plans to build something remarkable once his scholastic obligations became a thing of the past.

Inconspicuously parked on a BMW sales lot with just over 29,000 miles on its completely unmolested chassis, this 2006 Type-S was indeed a great find. Brian adds “I bought this car right after graduating college with intentions of finally making a Honda track car now that I had the money to do it right. One owner and zero modifications—it was perfect.” To get a feel for the car and determine exactly which route he’d be taking, Brian added the usual basic engine upgrades along with a set of wheels and coilovers, but thoughts of a purpose-built RSX were still marinating, and with boredom slowly creeping in, it was time to get serious.

Suspension was the first area of attack, and after going through two sets of coilovers in search of the perfect setup, Brian contacted Progress Group for a set of competition-proven antisway bars and coilovers and hasn’t looked back since. A supporting cast of bars, arms, and adjustable bits add additional support to the already stout handling of the Type-S.

The power department is an area that far too many haphazardly rush into with guns blazing. The majority, raised on a “bigger is better” mentality, are more concerned with huge peak numbers rather than usable power. Brian never subscribed to that type of thinking, and after some research, opted for a Jackson Racing supercharger. Not known for making outrageous power claims, what the JRSC lacks in bragging rights it more than makes up for in torque-filled midrange grunt.

A DC Sports exhaust manifold and A’PEXi Noir exhaust system help free up the path traveled by spent gases, but the real power player in this equation isn’t part of the combustion factor at all. An MFactory helical LSD was installed, along with a 5.46 final drive, a massive departure from the stock transmission. Brian adds, “It’s literally a beast to drive!

It absolutely pulls like crazy with the 5.46 final drive, not to mention the instant gratification of the supercharger whining at your ears. Oh yeah, and a little lesson for anyone interested in doing a similar setup: If you plan to do a new clutch, you’ll have to remove part of the supercharger. It’s best to do the clutch first, and well, I found out the hard way.” Tough lessons were nothing new to this enthusiast, especially since 95 percent of the work on this sinister black-on-black Type-S was done by Brian and a few friends at Quantico Hobby Shop. “Other than the final drive and the tuning, we did everything ourselves. No sponsors, no outside shops doing any of the work.”
