2004 Volkswagen Phaeton V8

By Bob Gordon Co-Publisher

I have driven lots of cars my review research over the of the cars I drive do not elicit a second look from the around town…but this it was different.

Driving a new VW Phaeton me the kind of attention that a trophy wife can generate a bunch of car guys who have it all.

During my week the Phaeton the car served me well, as I the back roads of Kentucky on my test drive routes…up and and out of the hollers…from bumpy county to high speed interstates…from the gym to the and from the gas station to the car wash and to the gas station…we have them all in beautiful central Kentucky.

The interesting places that I my Phaeton(alas for only a week)was to car around town. My daughter is looking for a new car, and as a good of a car guy (and a journalist in her own right or I say “own write”) she thought I should act as the Phaeton’s chauffer we made a day of looking at and driving the she hasn’t yet driven but was considering for hoping to see which ones generate a spark of love.

But an interesting and strange thing everytime we drove onto a lot and parked the Phaeton in a customers spot…out they came…one by one and two by two…kinda like the ghouls in the “Night of the Living Dead” for that, but the image worked for me) car guys moved ever and closer to the Phaeton, eyes over, drawn to this that was becoming their(and else’s)center of attention …but real smiles appeared on “Next Up” masked faces. eyes truly sparkled and were kicked and the questions

The questions I heard the most my week long test of the VW Phaeton were…What is it?; A VW?; Can I sit in it?; How much does it have and is it enough? How it drive? How do the Plasma screen work? Is it sold in Louisville?

All questions that deserved answers.

Throughout the week the VW generated more questions any other car I tested…and throughout the I continued to discover answers. a week is more than for most cars, I feel one week with this car is not time to learn all of the driving and nuances that you “just” across as you use the car as transportation in everyday

Some of the neat things I the Phaeton has a self charging halogen flashlight in place of a lighter; the automatic trunk not opened and closed at the touch of a but the lock latch actually up into its own space as the trunk its zenith, so you wouldn’t bang head into the latch; of the trunk…WOW, the Phaeton has a trunk to all trunks…Tony Soprano and the boys fill it with three bodies and still have left over for shovels, wrap, and some warm that happened to “fall da truck“; the back seat was so and well appointed that an NBA center would feel and pampered back there…plus the adjustments rivaled a Sharper recliner; speaking of recliners and Image, all the seats on the car I drove had A/C lumbar supports and a built-in just never want to the Phaeton…I was hoping for a back control and a WC but never found

Ok back to the most asked

What is it?

It is a heck of a car that any on the road…a beautiful venue provides a more than ride, a car that at the touch of a can be made more relevant for any condition: 4 Motion AWD, Damping Controls; Auto Air Suspension; Electronic Stabilization including ABS/ASR/EDL with assist…plus Engine Braking Electronic Brake Force and Servetronic Power Steering. The has Air Bags Everywhere, Tire Monitor; Rain Sensors and Windshield Washer Nozzles; Sun on the windows and on and on and on and on and on and on…you can see the details

A $75,000 VW?

And well worth it German ride and handling is the to cars costing twice as as it does. and the fit and finish are spectacular…with Sonnen Beige leather and Wood Trim in all the right the Phaeton was right at home in my estate carriage house (oh VW says it looses 15% of its owners to brands each year so it a step up for VW fans

Can I sit in it?

No sir, no sitting…only looking…you car peasants …”It’s good to be

How much horsepower? Is it enough

The 4.2 liter 40 valve engine is at 335 horsepower…with fuel consumption to be 15 in the city and 22 on the highway…does is it have horsepower. I must confess I think the Phaeton at 335 horsepower was I guess VW agrees with me as are making a W12 version of the car available in I can’t wait to get my hands on baby…another tidbit of information I furrowed out, is that the first cousin the Audi A8 has the same specs, but its 4.2 liter 40 engine is rated at 330 HP and is built in while the Phaeton’s engine is in Hungry…who says you only get the old same old in our reviews?

The Phaeton caused a chat room among VW aficionados here in with their online focused on the fact that my Blue car was spotted driving town…I guess it’s the one to visit the Bluegrass…and even a $75,000 MSRP I am sure it be the last.
