2002 Jaguar XK-Series Review

More like a high-performance luxury vehicle than a sports car.

Reviewed by Automotive on 9/11/2002

Overview

The 2002 Jaguar XK-Series has four styles available. The XK8 models come in coupe and convertible body styles, and the XKR comes in a higher-performance coupe and convertible.

The designs are sleek, smooth, and sporty and are among the top coupes. The engine is another area that sets the XK apart from rivals with a powerful four-liter V-8 DOHC that provides 290 horsepower unless the supercharged version is used. The XKR generates 370 hp with 387 lb-ft of torque, and the acceleration abilities are very impressive, getting up to 60 mph in only 5.2 seconds. The only transmission is a smooth-shifting five-speed automatic.

Jaguar adds 18-inch wheels and an upgraded suspension to the XKR models in order to handle the extreme power.

What’s New

Exterior

Jaguar XK

The 2002 Jaguar XK-Series is alluring and sensual, and the XK8 seems a little tame when comparing vehicles in the same price range. The basic design dates to the beginning Jaguar XK-E cars built in the 1960s. The headlight position creates the famous feline appearance that resembles a cat squint, and the lines are reminiscent of previous Jaguars resulting in continued popularity. Convertibles have a power-operated top that raises and lowers with a simple push button.

The legroom is excellent for front passengers but small for those occupying the rear seats. In fact, some owners do not even consider the rear seat room sufficient for adults at all. The XKR has a rear spoiler, a functional louvered hood, and 18-inch tires and wheels.

The suspension is Jaguar’s own Computer Active Technology Suspension, featuring shock absorbers that are computer-controlled to adjust ride firmness in accordance with road conditions. The XKR’s exterior also features the wire mesh grille. The convertible’s power-operated soft-top includes a glass rear window with integrated defogger.

All models come with headlight washers for added luxury.

Interior

The 2002 Jaguar XK-Series made seating capacity for four passengers, but the 2002 Jaguar XK models are better suited for two. The rear seat space is adequate for children but tight for adults. Many owners report it feels like more of a two-seater than a four-passenger vehicle.

It’s also graced with luxurious materials of Connolly leather and burl walnut wood.

The 2002 Jaguar XK-Series gets a beautiful cockpit design with large, easy-to-read dashboard controls. The models contain a premium audio system by Alpine Audiophile with heated front seats. Some excellent standard features include climate control, leather bucket seats, rear parking sensors, and cruise control.

The audio controls situate on the tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and a navigation system comes standard on XKR models but optional on the XK8. It’s DVD-based, so it holds a considerable amount of information.

Performance Handling

The 2002 Jaguar XK and XK8 models have a four-liter, V-8, dual-overhead-cam engine that creates 290 horsepower. All models come equipped with an automatic five-speed transmission, while acceleration is adequate for the class, getting up to 60 mph in a short 5.2 seconds. The electronic limit is 155 mph, and the XKR use a supercharged version of the four-liter. Handling is a strong point for Jaguar, as always. Taking the curves and dips easily, the XK-series maneuvers well.

The suspension helps on highway surfaces, absorbing most road imperfections.
